Nürburgring: The new asphalt is laid

FOUR MONTHS OF WORK Construction work on the Nürburgring-Nordschleife came to an end on Monday with the installation of the so-called asphalt surface course. The punctual start to the 2019 racing season can only be prevented by snowfall. Work in the Green Hell took four months to be ready in time for the start of the season.

From November to February, the over 90-year-old race track was completely renovated in five sections (airfield, Schwedenkreuz, Kallenhard, Wehrseifen, Ex-Mühle and Hohe Acht) over a total length of almost three kilometers. Furthermore, 900 meters of additional FIA catch fence were erected in the Hatzenbach and Kesselchen areas, further increasing protection for the active participants.

The now completed construction measure is the most extensive at the Nordschleife in more than 40 years. The Nürburgring operators have invested around four million euros in the project.

Specially developed asphalt
In addition to the unique characteristics of the Nordschleife, which were preserved by the work, another focus was on the special properties of the asphalt itself. This not only has to meet the particularly high quality demands of a racetrack, but also fulfill other properties in its recipe, which was developed especially for the Nordschleife.

The new asphalt was specially developed on the basis of discussions with drivers and managers over many years of work. It offers a medium grip that is adapted to the grip level of the entire Nordschleife. This means that the drivers do not have to constantly adjust to new conditions on a lap.

Countdown to the start of the 2019 VLN season
With the completion of construction work, it is clear that the racing season at the Nürburgring can start on time with the test and set-up runs of the VLN teams on March 16. One week later, the first round of the 2019 VLN Endurance Championship will start.
