Bott: Secured cargo can save lives

Load securing is no longer an issue that only affects heavy trucks. Anyone who uses a van, station wagon or transporter should always stow loads particularly securely. Cargo
The realistic collisions took place at an impact speed of 70 km/h on a stationary vehicle. Impressive images of secured and rather loosely stowed cargo are shown in the crash test videos.

As part of the FutureDay of the Bern University of Applied Sciences BFH in partnership with the professional associations of the automotive industry at the Dynamic Test Center DTC in Vauffelin, Bott Schweiz AG together with Basler Versicherungen demonstrated in crash tests the serious consequences that can result from inadequate load securing.

Everyday objects become dangerous catapults
Daniel Mauerhofer, Sales Manager at Bott Schweiz AG: "Load securing starts with vehicle procurement. The car must be set up according to the transport requirements. The appropriate vehicle equipment plays a central role here." A briefcase carelessly thrown into the trunk will reach 40 times its weight in the event of an emergency braking at 50 km/h once it picks up speed. The same applies to toolboxes, test equipment, spare or service parts. In this way, everyday objects or tools become dangerous catapults that, in the worst case, can mean the difference between life and death.

Transport goods must not shift in the event of an impact
Raphael Murri, head of passive safety at the DTC: "The load must not shift during acceleration, as occurs when driving or even in emergency situations. But the law does not require load securing that can withstand the forces acting in a collision." And Daniel Junker, Head of Vehicle Experts at Basler Versicherungen, adds: "Many people who drive a vehicle are not sufficiently aware of their responsibility. Daniel Mauerhofer: "Especially in times when so-called multifunctional vehicles are in demand, the potential for danger increases. The crash impressively showed what a lashing strap, an anti-slip mat, a protective grille, a flush bolted toolbox or a professionally mounted vehicle interior can do."
