Motorsport: Victories for the Amweg brothers

Fredy Amweg was once considered the king of the Swiss mountains. On Sunday, his son took his first day's victory in a mountain race at the well-attended Arosa ClassicCar; the day before, his younger brother Manuel won with Toyota at the Nürburgring. They have a good laugh: Thomas Amweg (left) is a credit to his father in the hillclimb races, while his younger brother Manuel fights for the TMG86 Cup title on the Nürburgring-Nordschleife.

Local hero Roger Moser versus newcomer Thomas Amweg. This was the affair of the classic mountain race in Arosa, which was attended by around 30,000 spectators over the four days. After Roger Moser suffered an accident in the second practice run on Friday due to a technical defect on his Martini-BMW F2 and retired early as defending champion, Thomas Amweg was suddenly the lone favorite.

The other 26 competitors from the Competition field (classified according to best time) also performed well with their historic racing cars, but in terms of material alone they were no match for Thomas Amweg's Ralt RT1-BMW F2 provided by Phimmoracing. "At first I was totally shocked by this track and the car, which was unknown to me", Thomas Amweg admitted. With 4'17.83, he set a new record in the third race run on the 7.3-kilometer track from Langwies to Arosa.

Winner on the first outing: Thomas Amweg is waved off as the day's winner at the twelfth event in Arosa. The man from Aargau set a new track record in Hans Peter's Ralt-BMW F2.

Toyota Swiss Racing leads the championship
Manuel Amweg was already celebrating on Saturday. The younger of the two brothers won the 6-hour race at the Nürburgring together with Thomas Lampert in the Toyota GT86 Cup. With their third win of the season, the Toyota Swiss Racing Team took the lead in the standings. Their strongest opponents in the title fight could not participate in the seventh VLN round after a training accident. However, with three VLN races still to go, everything is still open.
