A constantly changing weather forecast, severe weather warnings and torrential rain characterized Friday at the Nürburgring. The qualifying session got off to a correspondingly wet and slippery start. For Nico Müller and his teammates Christopher Mies, Pierre Kaffer and Laurens Vanthoor, a lap time of 8:28.361 minutes was only good enough for 22nd place.

"Qualifying didn't really go well for our car," explained Müller. "My teammate Pierre Kaffer had to pit after a puncture and was then only allowed to drive one lap. Those were not ideal conditions. That's why I couldn't do better than 22nd place. The competition is impressively strong. It probably won't be an easy race."
