Motorsport: GT feat by Rahel Frey

How can you win a race from 17th on the grid in a field of 26 equally matched GT3 sports cars? Rahel Frey and her Audi team-mate Philip Geipel showed them how on Sunday in Zandvoort (NL). "Everything really went right." Rahel Frey was still almost full of praise the day after her victory in the ADAC GT Masters at Zandvoort [...]

A perfect couple: After the autograph session for the fans, Rahel Frey and Philip Geipel did everything right in the turbulent race thanks to a perfect team strategy.

"Everything really worked out." Rahel Frey also expressed her surprise the day after her victory in the ADAC GT Masters at Zandvoort. The Audi R8 LMS from Yaco Racing was only 17th on the grid, and after an hour it was right at the front. How does that work?

When it started to rain after seven laps, the team and driver reacted correctly. Like some of her rivals, the driver from Solothurn headed for the pits to make an additional stop to change to rain tires. After that, she virtually flew past the drivers in the leading group, who were waiting for the mandatory stop on tires without tread. Her team partner Philip Geipel completed the second half of the race after the driver change and an equally quick switch back to slicks and defended the narrow lead right to the finish.

Rain brings blessings: After switching to rain tires early on, Rahel Frey set off on a race to catch up. After just 18 of the 32 laps, the number 14 no longer appeared on the windshield of the green Yaco-Audi R8, but the number 1 instead.

Two Swiss players battle it out for the Trophy title
"It all came together. We coordinated perfectly and did everything at the right moment. The mechanics changed the tires twice in record time, and we didn't make any mistakes on the track either," said the Swiss driver, explaining her success. It was her second after winning the 2015 finale at Hockenheim, where the final two races of the 2016 ADAC GT Masters will be held. "Of course, we want to win there again," she says, looking ahead. "However, we haven't got qualifying under control yet. That's our weakness. At the level of this championship, it's difficult to move up from midfield." Unless help comes from the top...

Fourth in the first race, which Geipel/Frey finished twelfth, Christopher Zanella in a Porsche was the best Swiss driver. BMW junior Louis Delétraz finished eighth and ninth in the M6 GT3 to score points for the first time. On the other hand, Rolf Ineichen (Lamborghini Huracan) came away empty-handed twice, except in the Trophy classification. Remo Lips (Corvette), who won the first race in Zandvoort, and Ineichen will decide the non-professional title between themselves.
