Motorsport: DTM title fight at the top

Europe's most popular touring car series is slowly turning into the home straight for 2016. After next weekend's two races in Hungary, it will become clear whether Edoardo Mortara from Geneva can still hope for the title with Audi. Nico Müller is also looking to score points again. Internal number 1: After his third win of the season at the Nürburgring, Edoardo Mortara from Geneva has the best chances of winning the title within Audi. To keep them alive until the finale at Hockenheim, the team must become stronger in qualifying in Hungary.

BMW driver Marco Wittmann can secure his second DTM title after 2014 at the Hungaroring even before the grand finale at Hockenheim (October 17 and 18). If Audi hadn't taken a stable approach early on and favored Jamie Green internally, this situation probably wouldn't have come about. Because in the meantime, Mortara from Geneva, who starts for Italy, still has the best chances of winning the title within the Audi team as the runner-up in the standings even though he is 33 points behind with 100 points still available.

Ingolstadt cars with better qualifying performance
To achieve this, however, the Audi A4 DTM primarily has to be better in qualifying than it was on the previous weekends. This is not due to a lack of pace in the races and the fighting spirit of the drivers, as Edoardo Mortara's three race wins prove. However, at the Hungarian GP circuit in particular, the qualifying performance of the Ingolstadt cars was lacking at the last DTM appearance two years ago. "That's why we'll do everything we can to move our cars further up the grid," promises Audi DTM Director Dieter Gass. "That will be particularly difficult there, however, we brought six cars into the points after that."

Nico Müller wants to continue the good series
Nico Müller is also hoping for this. He recently made up nine places in each of the two races at the Nürburgring, which was rewarded on Sunday with fifth place and the fastest race lap. He thus continued his streak of scoring points at least once at every DTM weekend in 2016. With two events to go, the driver from Berne is in eighth place in the championship and thus the fourth-best Audi driver.

You can follow both qualifying sessions (on Saturday from 12:30 p.m., on Sunday from 12:45 p.m.) and both races (Saturday from 2:30 p.m. and Sunday from 3 p.m.) live on ARD.
