Hill climb: Zemp shines, Amweg stumbles

ATTENDANCE At the Turckheim hill climb in Alsace and the Arosa ClassicCar, modern and historic racing vehicles created a buzz. The Swiss success rate was varied. In front of thousands of spectators with 3G proof, quite a few of whom came from Switzerland close to the border, and in the best external conditions, the 65th Int. hill climb Turckheim-3 Epis went over the stage. In front of thousands of spectators with 3G proof, quite a few of which came from Switzerland near the border, and in the best external conditions, the 65th Int. Hill Climb Turckheim-3 Epis went over the stage. With the day's victory in a new record time, Geoffrey Schatz on a Nova Proto with Oreca turbo engine secured the third consecutive title in the French hillclimb championship, Ronald Garcès on Audi R8 LMS ultra the first in the production cars.

Zemp and Grand shine
Michel Zemp shone with 12th place overall on the hillclimb circuit, which was new to him and just under 6 kilometers long. In the process, he won the E2 Sportscar class up to two liters displacement.

With a hammer time in the third race run the night before, the man from Langnau immediately improved by three positions. Only two of the many two-liter sports cars from Group CN and E2 were faster than Zemp with his Norma-Honda. Bravo, that motivates for the participation in the FIA Hill Climb Masters in October in Portugal!

In the class of E2 racing sports cars up to one liter displacement, Joël Grand at the wheel of his Osella with BMW engine (just over 200 hp) also had his French opponents under control.

Michel Zemp also had to quickly learn in Turckheim how best to brake and drive through a chicane from over 200 km/h. Most impressive is how the best Frenchmen did that (photos: Peter Wyss and Marko Tarrach).

Egli must travel home
Philip Egli only took part in the practice session. Afterwards, the technical commissioners criticized the weight of his Dallara. This complied with the Swiss regulations, but not with those of the French. Because it was no longer possible to switch to another race field, Egli returned home on Sunday morning without having achieved anything.

As the second fastest touring car driver behind the German Ralf Seger (VW Golf 1 16V) Ludovic Monnier excelled in his VW Golf 2 16V. Hervé Villoz also made it onto the podium in third place in the E1 two-liter class in his Renault Clio RS.

This national classification under the title "Trophée des Nations" was won by Fausto Bormolini from Livigno with a Reynard K02. His total time from two of three runs would have been enough for 8th place overall among more than 200 riders.

Thomas Amweg beats himself
Thomas Amweg experienced at the Arosa ClassicCar that you first have to get to the finish line to reach it as the lone favorite. The man from Aargau had always won this race since 2016 and also set the clear fastest practice time this year.

In the first race run, however, the rear of the Martini-BMW F2 broke away after the last track underpass and hit a road post protected by a straw bale. The rear right suspension was damaged to such an extent that the car could not be repaired on site.

The not undeserved winner of the day at the 17th edition of this classic hillclimb race was Florian Feustel from southern Germany, who lives and works in eastern Switzerland, in his well-known Porsche Carrera RSR. He also improved his own category record.

The winners of the evenly contested events can be found in the ranking lists (see below) and further information can be found on the homepage of the event, which was favored by a record crowd and good weather.

This time, Florian Feustel was not only the fastest driver with a roof over his head in his Porsche, but also the day's winner after Amweg's mistake in practice (Photo: Urs Gehrig).
