Steckborn: Thunder rumbles on Lake Constance

MEMORIAL MOUNTAIN RACE The Memorial Mountain Race Steckborn - Eichhölzli is primarily dedicated to historic vehicles. Some racing cars, piloted by well-known drivers, symbolize the transition to the modern times of hillclimb racing. At the Steckborn hill climb next weekend, September 22/23, the stopwatch will not be running. For the expected participants, around 280 in number, the fun of free [...]

The spectators in Steckborn will experience a colorful cross-section of motorsports in a picturesque region.

The stopwatch will not be running at the Steckborn hill climb next weekend, September 22/23. For the expected participants, about 280 in number, the fun of free driving and the presentation of their partly valuable cars in front of a large interested audience should be in the foreground.

Some will - because they are able to do it - push the gas pedal of their own or entrusted race cars but certainly hard. In the field of single-seater racing cars, for example, the drivers Bruno Huber (Argo F3), Erwin Steingruber (March-BMW F2) and Roger Moser (Martini-BMW F2), who are familiar from past and present times. Moser recently celebrated second place overall at the 2018 Arosa ClassicCar hill climb.

Always a feast for the eyes: Sauber C5 with Eugen Strähl at the wheel. He was already there in Steckborn in 2015.

Familiar names at the wheel
In addition to Marcel Fässler (Audi Quattro), who has already been introduced, the "Show Program" field includes many illustrious names. For example, ex-motorcycle GP driver Bruno Kneubühler on a 1963 Honda. Slalom doyen Fritz Erb on an Opel GT Junior. Eugen Strähl on a Sauber C5 - the drivers and the design of Peter Sauber were among the fastest representatives of two-liter sports cars in the 1970s.

Local hero Marcel Tobler will bring a March 781 F1 to the start. GT specialist Philipp Frommenwiler will make the area tremble with a BMW Z4 GT3 with a beefy V8 engine - unfortunately, the Thurgau native will only be driving on Saturday.

Philipp Frommenwiler puts the spurs to Schubert's former BMW Z4 GT3. The brute sound of the V8 engine will be heard on the other shore of Lake Constance...

Best known from modern hillclimb races and slaloms of the Swiss championship are the Audi A4 STW of Danny Krieg, the Berg-Pokal winner of 2016. With it, the man from Schwyz also took several class victories in the E1-2000 group in 2018.

Really modern are the Seat Leon Cupra TCR of Bruno Sawatzki and the Lexus ISF CC-SR of Christoph Wüest, known from the VLN Nürburgring.

Real nostalgia will finally arise when old master Edy Kobelt leaves the starting line in Steckborn with his beautiful Ford Cortina Lotus.

The hill climb season does not end until Steckborn
In the two large Memorial Performance fields, virtually all vehicles on two, three and four wheels are a visual and acoustic treat.

The 2018 Swiss Mountain Championship may have come to an end last weekend - but peace will only return after the Steckborn - Eichhölzli Memorial.
