Toyota: Plant juice for the diesel

SUSTAINABLE The Toyota Land Cruiser and Hilux models will be designed to run on HVO100 diesel, a non-fossil fuel made from 100 percent renewable sources. It will start in the first quarter of 2023.

Plant-based diesel fuel makes the Land Cruiser more environmentally friendly.

Toyota's two rugged Hilux (gallery) and Land Cruiser frame-built models will become compatible with HVO100 diesel, a fuel derived from renewable sources, starting in the first quarter of next year. HVO100 (Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil means hydrogenated vegetable oil) is created by adding additional hydrogen to normal vegetable oil.

The fuel meets the European quality standard EN 15940 for paraffinic diesel. It has a higher cetane number than standard diesel - which means it is more ignitable - and a lower sulfur and aromatics content. It is produced from vegetable oil or waste material such as used frying oil.

Target is 15.5 million tons per year
HVO100 is available at more and more service stations in Europe. And as demand increases, so will production. The goal is to increase the volume from around four million tons today to 15.5 million tons annually by 2030. Driving with HVO100 does not require any conversion.

The most important technical change compared with the previous fuels is an adaptation of the injection system for a higher fuel volume, because HVO100 is less dense than normal diesel. However, the change does not affect operation with standard diesel. Either fuel can be used in everyday operation.
