Damian Schmid, a 22-year-old automotive mechatronics technician from eastern Switzerland, shows off his gold medal.

By winning the gold medal at the Euro Skills, the 22-year-old automotive mechatronics technician from eastern Switzerland is once again doing a great job of promoting the dual Swiss education system.

Damian Schmid: "I am very relieved. A huge burden has been lifted from me."

Strong nerves and quick comprehension
After coming fifth and gaining a diploma at World Skills 2019 in Kazan, the commercial vehicle mechatronics technician went one better at Euro Skills. He performed almost perfectly in a strong field of competitors, proving his strong nerves and quick thinking.

For the first time, a Swiss automotive mechatronics technician competed in the commercial vehicle discipline at Euro Skills.

Swiss regularly in the top ten

Olivier Maeder, AGVS training manager: "Damian was particularly strong in vehicle electrics and electronics, in locating and rectifying engine faults and in engine mechanics. With his performance, the Toggenburg native from Nesslau SG provided further proof of the high quality of basic vocational training in the Swiss automotive industry. Swiss automotive mechatronics engineers are regulars in the top ten at international professional championships."

A total of 400 young professionals competed in 45 events in Graz. With 14 medals, the 17 Swiss professionals surpassed their previous record from 2012, when they won eight medals.

Exceptionally high level of quality

Olivier Mader: "These vocational championships are very valuable for us. On the one hand, they are confirmation that we have an exceptionally high level of quality in numerous basic vocational training courses thanks to our dual education system. On the other hand, they are a great opportunity for young professionals to showcase the knowledge they have acquired on a big stage."
