Colorful range: Teams can now build on the experience gained with last season's tires.

After analyzing all the results of the recent tire test in Abu Dhabi and the team evaluations, a vote was held on the specification of the tires for the 2020 season in accordance with Article 12.6.1 of the technical regulations. The vote of the Formula 1 teams resulted in the unanimous decision to keep the 2019 specification tires for next season.

Advantages in the tight development time
In making this decision, Pirelli, the FIA and the F1 teams took several factors into account.

  • The teams no longer have to change the designs of their 2020 cars. This would otherwise have been necessary to accommodate the different profile of the 2020 tire design.
  • As a result, the teams can now continue the development of their cars for 2020 - which is already at an advanced stage - without interruption.
  • The use of the 2019 tires also guarantees continuity for the teams, combined with the advantage of using a familiar product in the final season of the current regulations.

Less tire pressure
The new solutions for the 2020 tire designs tested last week in Abu Dhabi, which Pirelli will continue to develop for the 18-inch era starting in 2021, allow for lower tire pressures than those currently in use. As a result, they will be able to compensate for the increase in performance expected from the next generation of vehicles.

New 18-inch tires from 2021
These new solutions for the 18-inch tires to be used from 2021 already showed positive results in the first tests on the track at this size.

The development test program with the 18-inch tires for the years from 2021 will continue in 2020. It begins in February with Ferrari in Jerez, Spain.
