United Autosports captured the biggest trophies in Le Mans, the WEC and the ELMS in 2020. Such trophies should soon be on Fabio Scherer's shelf as well.

Fabio Scherer will join an experienced squad at United Autosports. The team was founded in 2009 by British race driver Richard Dean and current McLaren CEO Zak Brown. Together they still run the team, which last year celebrated LMP2 victory at Le Mans and the WEC title as well as winning the European Le Mans Series.

Career highlight
Scherer will share the cockpit of the LMP2 sports car with reigning world champions and Le Mans class winners Phil Hanson (GB) and Filipe Albuquerque (P). Born and living in Engelberg, Switzerland, Scherer is overjoyed to be part of the United Autosports 2021 team.

Fabio Scherer: "Working with world champions is a great opportunity and another big step in my career. The World Endurance Championship is one of the most famous and competitive championships. For sure, the 24 Hours of Le Mans will be the highlight of my racing career so far."

Experience will help
The two team owners are sure that the Swiss will fit in well with the team.

Richard Dean: "His experience from Formula 3 and the DTM will help him adapt to the sports cars. Although he'll be racing in the WEC for the first time, I'm sure he'll settle into the team well and quickly get up to speed so that we can defend our title in LMP2."

Fabio Scherer has matured into a complete racing driver. He now wants to prove this in the sports cars, with which the manufacturers are once again appearing in greater numbers thanks to new regulations.

New DTM too expensive
When asked, Scherer explained why he had decided against remaining in the DTM, in which GT3 sports cars will be raced from next year.

Fabio Scherer: "I chose this new direction because I clearly see a future for myself there. Also with the long-term goal of gaining a foothold in the new LMDh category from 2023. A number of brands have already announced that they're going to enter it again. With the DTM, everything is still very unclear and simply far too expensive, as the factories will no longer support the teams."
