The video of the final race of the Drift Kings Europe Series in Serres, Greece, shows the rollercoaster of emotions of the man from Central Switzerland. As the runner-up in qualifying, there was still a lot in store for Yves Meyer on this year's last race day - even a push for second place in the championship.

What is it?
On Sunday morning, however, his crew discovered a pool under his BMW E22 Euro Fighter. As it turned out, a leaking power steering system was the cause.

Yves Meyer: "The thread for the connection was broken. So we could only make a makeshift seal and top up with 1.5 liters of servo fluid for each run."

Due to his strong performance in qualifying, Meyer went first in the lead run in the Battles. He still had power assistance in that run, but not in the chase runs that immediately followed. Here he had to use all his strength to steer the wide-tired car without power steering and follow the car in front.

Yves Meyer: "That's actually impossible. But if I hadn't started, I would have lost everything. I wanted to take my chance on the podium at all costs."

Narrowly inferior
Only in the round of 16 (not in 1/16 as told in the video) he was eliminated in a direct fight with his championship opponent Massimo Checchin - and this was very close.

After a tie in the first battle, the Italian decided the repeat runs in his favor by half a point. The only Swiss in the field was thus out, Checchin advanced one round to the semifinals and took third place overall in 2019.

Yves Meyer's lead run against Massimo Checchin. In the end, the Italian prevailed and entered the semifinals.

However, the positive outweighs the quiet disappointment.

Yves Meyer: "Even as fourth in the championship, I'm mega satisfied. This was only my second season in the top league. In the end, we are missing the points from the first event in which we did not participate. In addition, we had to complain about an engine failure once."

First FIA Games, then Intercontinental Cup
But the season is not yet over for the Lucerne native. On the contrary, the final spurt has only just begun. On the first weekend in November, Yves Meyer will represent Switzerland in the drifting category at the FIA Motorsport Games in Vallelunga.

And on the weekend of December 1, he returns to Japan for the FIA Intercontinental Drifting Cup. His star rose there a year ago with a surprising second place. With official support from Toyota Switzerland, he will be cross-driving a Toyota GT86 there.

The Road to Japan project is already in full swing. Meyer wants to build on last year's success with the Toyota GT86.
