These are the 2021 finalists by category
- World Car of the Year: Honda-e, Toyota Yaris, Volkswagen ID.4
- World Urban Car: Honda-e, Honda Jazz, Toyota Yaris
- World Luxury Car: Land Rover Defender, Mercedes-Benz S-Class, Polestar 2
- World Performance Car: Audi RS Q8, Porsche 911 Turbo, Toyota GR Yaris
- World Car Design of the Year: Honda-e, Land Rover Defender, Mazda MX30
The first world car was chosen in 2005
The World Car of the Year award is aimed at the global market. It was awarded for the first time in February 2005.
93 journalists from around 25 countries evaluate automobiles sold on at least two continents. Later, awards were introduced in the Performance Car, Green Car and Car Design categories. In the Green Car and Car Design categories, special experts make a preliminary selection.
No representative from Switzerland on the jury
Long-time senior stakeholders who appoint the jury include journalists John McCormick, Gerry Malloy, and Jens Meiners. The other jurors based and published in Germany are Stefan Anker, Thomas Geiger, Yoshihiro Kimura and Jürgen Zöllter.
France is represented by only one journalist, Austria by Stephan Schätzl and Switzerland is not represented. Most of the jurors are based in Great Britain, North America and Asia.
The first world car was the Audi A6l in 2005.
