Toyota: Everything revolves around hydrogen

MAKABLE FUTURE Toyota supports a hydrogen-powered ship. The catamaran "Energy Observer" extracts hydrogen from seawater and is thus autonomous in terms of energy requirements. Hydrogen
The "Energy Observer" is more than a boat. It provides inspiration and solutions on how energy can be obtained from nature in a sustainable and compatible way. The ship is scheduled to arrive in Tokyo before the Olympic Games.
Hydrogen
The voyage of the "Energy Observer" is both a human and a technological challenge, testing the on-board technology under extreme conditions. The experts on board are particularly challenged.

The Japanese manufacturer is supporting the first hydrogen ship on its world voyage. The electrically powered catamaran "Energy Observer" operates with a mix of renewable energies and a system that generates carbon-free hydrogen from seawater. On its multi-year voyage, the "Energy Observer," which emits neither greenhouse gases nor particulate matter, aims to demonstrate the potential of renewable energies.

Alternative to battery storage solutions
Hydrogen is at the heart of the Energy Observer project and also the main reason Toyota Motor Europe is involved. Compared to a battery storage solution alone, it offers a significant weight advantage. To ensure that hydrogen can be used as a practical fuel alternative, extensive tests were carried out under demanding conditions.

Mirai series vehicle with hydrogen drive
The advantages of hydrogen propulsion are: fast refueling, long range for passenger cars, buses and trucks. In Switzerland, the Toyota Mirai, the first production vehicle developed purely for hydrogen, was launched on the market in April this year.
