Vehicles powered by natural gas, such as the Volkswagen Polo, which will be subjected to endurance testing by the AutoSprintCH team starting in April, are reporting good sales.

After more than half of all new passenger cars were already powered by all four wheels in December, January has now followed suit. The 4×4 share at the start of the year was exactly 50.1 percent. On the one hand, this development is encouraging; car buyers appreciate the safety and comfort features on offer, especially in winter road conditions. On the other hand, all-wheel drive increases fuel consumption, as this development makes it more difficult to achieve CO2 reduction targets.

Rising demand for alternative drives
In this respect, the growth in alternative drive systems, which continued in January, is encouraging. Of their 5.9 percent market share, hybrid engines consisting of a gasoline engine and an electric motor accounted for more than two-thirds and alone accounted for 4 percent of the market. In 2017 as a whole, the alternative share had been 5.6 percent. With an increasing range of corresponding models with gas, hydrogen, electric or hybrid drive, this figure is sure to rise in 2018.
