Ford: The new Puma peeks around the corner

SAFETY FIRST In road traffic, it can be useful to know what's around the next corner or bend. Local hazard warning comes as standard on the new Ford Puma. The drawing shows an overview of how Ford's local hazard warning system works.

If drivers ahead encounter sudden traffic jams, accidents or other obstacles, the following drivers, who may not yet have a view of what is happening, are warned in advance. A warning can be given in a wide variety of situations, for example also in the event of sudden hail or a landslide.

Automatic alerts
The warnings are triggered automatically by the car in front, for example when the hazard warning lights are activated or by emergency braking; in the worst case, also by deployed airbags. The driver does not have to become active to issue warnings.

Connection with other brands
Crucially, the benefits of this technology are not limited to those drivers who travel in Ford vehicles. Thanks to networked cloud systems, the information sent via Ford's own mobile network can also be shared with vehicles from other automakers - and vice versa.

The system is expected to be available on more than 80 percent of all new Ford models by the end of 2020.

Ford Pass Connect modem
Based on information from the Ford Pass Connect modem, the local hazard warning can then indicate potentially dangerous situations if they are not perceived by either the driver or the driver's own assistance systems, for example because they are located behind a curve that cannot be seen.

Monitoring of important functions
Sensors monitor activities such as emergency braking, fog lights and traction control to detect adverse weather or road conditions. This data is processed to determine the location of the hazard and the nature of the incident, and shared with other road users.

Warnings are also made possible by access to data from the professionals at Here Technologies. These provide information from local authorities and emergency services as well as other road users connected to the cloud.
