E-fuels: A necessary complement to electrification

ALTERNATIVE The German Engineering Federation has also spoken out against the ban on internal combustion engines in the EU from 2035. It sees this as the wrong way forward in terms of both climate and innovation policy.

E-Fuels
E-fuels are needed to deploy climate-friendly propulsion technologies in several areas in the future.

The problem is not the technology, but the fossil fuel, according to a press release. The VDMA also sees Europe's industrial strength at risk if the internal combustion engine is forced to be phased out quickly by law.

Climate-friendly options for drives

President Karl Haeusgen: "Instead of effectively banning the internal combustion engine by limiting all tailpipe emissions to zero, all climate-friendly drive options should be used. The internal combustion engine powered by CO2-neutral, green e-fuels remains a necessary complement to the electrification of road transport. After all, it is not the engine that is the problem, but the fossil fuels used to date."

Rapid exit jeopardizes industrial strength
The combustion engine also remains economically significant. According to the VDMA, the new jobs created by electromobility do not compensate for those lost and are not interchangeable.

According to the association, the rapid phase-out of the internal combustion engine, which would be forced by law, would also jeopardize Europe's industrial strength. E-fuels are also needed to enable climate-friendly drive technologies in other applications such as construction and agricultural machinery, municipal vehicles and the transport sector.
