Diesel
Demand for the compression-ignition engine on the car market in Switzerland slumped by 20 percent in March.

The first driving bans are to come into force in Germany as early as this spring. And the Geneva government has also announced that it is considering a temporary driving ban for old diesel vehicles. These are aimed at diesel cars with the Euro-1 to Euro-5 emissions standards, which are vehicles that were put into circulation before September 2015. According to the Federal Office for Statistics (BfS), around one million such cars are also on Swiss roads. They do not meet the current Euro 6 emissions standard.

Every second second-hand car does not meet the Euro 6 standard
In total, there are more than 87,000 used diesel cars for sale on Switzerland's largest online car market. Of these, every second vehicle does not meet the Euro 6 standard. One in six of these (14,000) meets the Euro 4 standard at most and only one in five meets the Euro 5 standard (25,000). These cars would be affected by bans.

Demand continues to show a downward trend
Uncertainty about the future of diesel vehicles is reflected in demand (new and used cars) on comparis.ch: Fuel-specific searches for diesel-powered vehicles plummeted by 20 percent last month alone, reaching a record low at the end of March 2018. Between January 2015 and April 2018, overall demand fell by 44 percent. Over the same period, demand for gasoline-powered passenger vehicles has increased 71 percent.

Inform about restrictions before purchase
Comparis mobility expert Harry H. Meier: "Anyone thinking of buying an older diesel Occasion should inform themselves well about the announced driving restrictions before buying and weigh them against their personal mobility needs. According to current knowledge, those who opt for a model with the Euro 6 emissions standard will drive best.
