The major car manufacturers are unanimous: the future belongs to quiet and emission-free drives. With the exception of the Renault-Nissan Group, which has already been offering a respectable range of electric vehicles for half a decade, traditional car manufacturers have so far found it difficult to move away from classic fossil-fuel-powered engines. Now the wind is set to shift in favor of electric vehicles. Electric cars are still niche products - but customer interest is steadily increasing. The latest update of the VCS environmental car list provides information on the current electrically powered models. The Hyundai Ioniq deserves special mention. It is the world's first newly developed passenger car designed solely for three alternative drive systems. Initially available as a hybrid model or purely electric vehicle, it will also be launched as a plug-in hybrid in summer 2017.
