Around 1.5 million units of the French car have been sold worldwide to date. The close relationship with its predecessor has been clearly retained in the new model. A wise decision.
The length of the car increased by eleven centimetres and the wheelbase by two centimetres. The high beltline with the steeply raked windshield and the roof spoiler at the rear make the car significantly more dynamic.
Noticeably more space in the interior
There is now more space in the interior thanks to the increased mass, and the trunk also offers a respectable volume. The driver has a view of digitalized instruments and can easily reach important controls on the slightly angled center console.
In the center of the cockpit is a seven-inch screen for navigation and infotainment, which is also available in 9.3-inch size on request.
Engines deliver 100 to 155 hp
The engine is either a three-cylinder petrol engine with a capacity of 999 cc and 100 hp), a 130 hp four-cylinder petrol engine with a capacity of 1333 cc, which is also available in the top-of-the-range model with 155 hp. In addition, a 115 hp diesel with a displacement of 1461 cc is also available.
All distribute their power to the front wheels. The three-cylinder engine is available with a five-speed manual gearbox, while the 130 hp and diesel versions are available with either a six-speed manual or seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox.
In the Initiale version, the automatic is part of the series. Anyone who can afford it should opt for this version. The car offers a lot of driving pleasure in every situation, the equipment is complete and elegant. A successful combination.
Semi-autonomous driving in action
On the road, the Captur proves that typical French driving culture has been preserved in its genes. Potholes and bumps on country roads are easily absorbed.
On highways, the Captur shows how semi-autonomous driving works in practice. In addition to the functions of the adaptive cruise control, the highway and traffic jam assistant can steer the vehicle autonomously, using the lane markings as a guide. However, the driver must keep their hands on the steering wheel at all times and keep an eye on the traffic.
Extensive equipment from the base
The Renault Captur is available as Life, Zen, Intens, Edition One and Initiale. Even the basic Life version is impressive. It offers 16-inch steel wheels, a 4.2-inch on-board computer, cruise control with limiter, electrically operated front and rear windows, central locking with remote control, full LED headlights, lane departure warning and emergency brake assist as well as traffic sign recognition as standard.
Prices start at 19,500 francs. The Swiss market launch is in December.
Plug-in hybrid drive coming from 2020
As for the Captur with plug-in hybrid drive announced for late spring, it is already known that it will be launched on the market with a 1.6-liter petrol engine, two electric motors, a 9.8 kWh battery and a multi-mode gearbox. The all-electric range is expected to be 45 kilometers with a speed of up to 135 km/h.
