Anniversary: Half a century of golf 🎥

EIGHT GENERATIONS At Volkswagen, the new year is all about the Golf. In 1974, this model succeeded the legendary Beetle and quickly became a pioneer in its class.

To mark its 50th anniversary, the current generation is now receiving an update, which will be presented in a few weeks. VW will be showcasing the success story of the tradition-steeped compact model from January 31 to February 4 at the Rétromobile trade fair in Paris, and another Volkswagen Classic appearance will follow from February 2 to 4 at the Bremen Classic Motorshow with a Golf I and the unique EA 276 concept car - the predecessor of the Golf from 1969, which was built in Wolfsburg. The world premiere of the new edition, which will feature numerous innovations, will then take place at the end of January 2024.

Most successful European car

It was an automotive revolution when Volkswagen presented the first Golf and thus the successor to the Beetle in 1974. Front-wheel drive instead of a rear engine, with a variable overall concept thanks to a large tailgate and folding rear seat backrest. In addition, the linear design by Giorgetto Giugiaro introduced a new design language. The first million were sold as early as 1976, and 37 million have been delivered to date. This makes the Golf the most successful European car and the best-selling VW of all time. Over the decades, many variants have been added to the model range: the GTI, the Cabriolet, the Variant and others. Each model generation also brought technological and comfort innovations.

In the anniversary year 2024, Volkswagen is presenting the eighth-generation evolutionary stage. It comes with visual refinements, new assistance systems and drive systems as well as infotainment and software of the current generation.
