Sales: This is the hit parade of models

With a total of 29,451 new registrations, December 2020 was - as in 2019 - the strongest calendar month of the year. Despite the final spurt, 24 percent fewer passenger cars took to the roads of Switzerland and the Principality of Liechtenstein in the 2020 car year, with 236,828 registrations.

Alternative drives continue on record run
A look at the current and cumulative model statistics shows which cars were particularly popular. In December 2020, one model came out on top: the Tesla Model 3. 1561 new registrations were made for the car from the US electric car manufacturer.

This result has helped the December share of hybrid, electric, gas and hydrogen models climb to a high of 42.4 percent. This in turn has lifted the market shares of the alternatives for 2020 as a whole, leading to a record 28.2 percent (2019: 13.1 percent).

The second and third places in the December 2020 model statistics were taken by German brands with the VW Tiguan (935) and the VW Golf (828). They are followed by the BMW X1 (624), the VW Polo (566), the Volvo XC40 (517) and the Audi Q3 (516).

Seventh place goes to the Fiat 500 small car (479), while the all-electric Renault Zoe is close behind in ninth place with 478 registrations. Bringing up the rear in the top ten is the Škoda Octavia,.

However, the Czech automaker's result in December does not cloud the fact that the Octavia is the favorite model of Mr. and Mrs. Swiss seen over the entire year 2020. A total of 5892 units were newly registered.

Second place in the annual statistics goes to the Tesla Model 3 (5051). Third place goes to the VW Tiguan (4965). What is striking about the overall statistics is that more than half of the top ten are SUVs and station wagons.
