Environment: Four brands plan new charging network
BMW, Daimler, Ford and the Volkswagen Group with Audi and Porsche are planning a joint venture to set up the most powerful charging network for electric vehicles in Europe. Together, they want to set up a considerable number of stations in a short space of time and thus increase the long-distance suitability of electric mobility. The planned infrastructure will support a charging capacity of up to 350 kW and thus enable much faster charging than current fast-charging networks. Construction will begin in 2017 and around 400 locations are planned in Europe as a first step. By 2020, customers should have access to thousands of high-power charging points. The charging stations on freeways and highly frequented thoroughfares are to be publicly accessible and thus enable electric driving over longer distances. Charging is to be further developed so that in future it will be as convenient as conventional refueling. All vehicles equipped with the CCS standard should be able to use the charging network regardless of brand.
