Statistics: Geneva car thieves prefer VW

You might be all the more surprised when you suddenly find yourself standing in front of an empty parking lot. As the largest motor vehicle insurer in Switzerland, AXA Winterthur counts around 500 stolen passenger cars every year. Fredy Egg, head of claims at AXA Winterthur, says, "Most of our customers' cars are stolen within the country's borders, though we do notice large regional differences." According to AXA Winterthur, the frequency of theft in the canton of Geneva is six times higher than the Swiss average. The cantons of Basel Stadt and Vaud follow in second and third place, with around twice as many stolen vehicles as the average. In midfield is the canton of Neuchâtel, whose car theft rate is only slightly above the Swiss average. The rate in the other cantons is below average. The canton of Glarus is the least likely to have a car stolen - the theft rate there is ten times lower than the average.
Bentley is particularly popular with car thieves
VW vehicles are most frequently reported as stolen, as these are very common in Switzerland. If, on the other hand, we look at the theft frequency, i.e. the number of thefts compared to the number of insured vehicles, it becomes clear which brands are particularly popular with thieves. Bentleys, for example, are stolen around four times as often as the average, Porsches around three times as often. The BMW, Rolls-Royce, Alfa Romeo and Lotus brands are also popular with car thieves.
