Shell: Truck of the future now also runs on CNG 🎥

NEXT STEP With the Starship Truck, Shell has demonstrated how economical a truck with diesel technology can be on the road. But it can do even better: The large truck is now also powered by Compressed Natural Gas.

At the ACT Expo in California, the latest version of the Shell Starship 3.0 caused a stir with its orange-yellow aerodynamic body. Shell does not want to stand on the sidelines when it comes to technical innovations, energy efficiency and sustainability. The company already developed the Starship 2.0 five years ago.

Between 2018 and 2022, the futuristic truck demonstrated how economical a truck with modern diesel technology can be. The visually striking features of the truck at the time were its design with a carbon-fiber cab designed to minimize air resistance and a gap seal for between the tractor and trailer.

Natural gas reduces CO2-emissions

Selda Gunsel, President Shell Global Solutions (gallery at right): "Now it's clear that it can be even better. The diesel engine in the Starship Truck 3.0 a gas engine place made. As the freight industry drives the transition to a lower-carbon future, optimizing operational efficiency is becoming increasingly important."

The truck, which is powered by the new X15N gas engine, is virtually CO2-neutral on the road.

Puneet Jhawar, General Manager Global Spark Ignited Business at Cummins: "The improved supply of renewable CNG and the Larger offer at public CNG filling stations helps long-haul fleets realize the environmental and economic benefits of this technology."

Test drive to Jacksonville

The new vehicle will soon complete a first demonstration drive on the U.S. West Coast. This will also serve as preparation for another cross-country drive from San Diego to Jacksonville.

Selda Gunsel: "I am proud of the team of the Starship 3.0 and am eager to see the results of the demonstration drive. We are all working to continue pushing the boundaries of today's technologies. And this truck shows how different innovations can work together to accelerate the path to decarbonization."
