During the holidays, many people are on the road by car - whether it's shopping for the last gifts or driving to visit family, friends and acquaintances. Seat now gives tips on how to get safely over the holidays by car - even if, as here, it is not an Arona.

Here's how to arrive most safely with your loved ones with some basic driving tips and advice on loading and safety.

Packed
Pack all bags, suitcases and gift packages in the trunk if possible. The heaviest items should be placed far down, the lighter ones on top. Never place heavy items of luggage loosely on the parcel shelf or in the back seat. These can turn into life-threatening projectiles during emergency braking or rear-end collisions. For example, if you suddenly have to brake hard at a speed of 50 km/h, a 30-kilogram package can turn into a 750-kilogram projectile that then flies through your car unsecured.

Packed - but not at the wheel
Of course, it is usually cold at Christmas time and accordingly you protect yourself with thick winter jackets, gloves, scarf and hat against the often icy temperatures. But at the wheel, you should take off the bulky clothing! It restricts your necessary freedom of movement and thus endangers your safety. It is better to set a comfortable temperature of around 21 degrees in the car.

Travel time is congestion time
Shortly before the holidays, there is a significantly higher traffic density on the roads. For this reason, drivers should take special precautions. If you're stuck in a traffic jam, the main thing is to stay calm - once you're stuck, you can't help it anyway. Especially if you are traveling with small children, you should make sure in advance that you have enough provisions and entertainment on board.

Where to put the tree?
The Christmas tree is also often transported home by car. Therefore, before you buy it, pay attention not only to whether it fits in your own four walls, but also whether you can transport it with your vehicle. If the tree is too big, try not to put it inside necessarily. If you transport it on the roof, it must be well secured and the heavy lower part of the tree must face forward. Basically, the load must not protrude sideways over the car and must be marked from one meter excess length e.g. with a red cloth or a red light.
