Cyber security: hacking in competition
PARTNER Trend Micro, a global provider of cybersecurity solutions, announces automaker Tesla as the lead sponsor for the first hacking competition specifically for the automotive industry.

The Pwn2Own Automotive hacking contest is co-hosted by the Zero Day Initiative (ZDI) and VicOne, a subsidiary of Trend Micro. It is the first competition of its kind to focus exclusively on connected vehicles. The collaboration between the two companies creates a synergy between cybersecurity in the automotive industry and the fight against cybercrime. The goal is to promote security research in the connected car ecosystem, incentivize manufacturers to participate in the collaboration, and raise awareness of the numerous, complex components of modern vehicles.
1760 new security vulnerabilities
Tesla has worked with Trend Micro and Pwn2Own in the past. The automaker's knowledge of electric car complexity also contributed to the success of the March 2023 competition in Vancouver. Last year, ZDI responsibly discovered 1706 new security vulnerabilities. In the current year, more than 1000 zero-day vulnerabilities have already been reported by ZDI to date.
One million euros in prize money
Nearly one million euros in prize money and non-cash prizes are available for the event, which will take place from January 24 to 26, 2024, including cars from Tesla. There will be four categories: Tesla, In-Vehicle Infotainment, Electric Vehicle Chargers and Operating Systems.
Udo Schneider of Trend Micro said, "Pwn2Own is a key pillar of our Zero Day initiative, which has helped us discover new vulnerabilities in consumer devices, industrial systems and emerging technologies for years. We're pleased to welcome Tesla as a title sponsor and look forward to becoming even more involved in cybersecurity for the automotive industry."
