Snow chains: When tires need help

If a lot of snow falls in a short period of time, it is necessary to fit snow chains. It is advantageous to be prepared for this. And what does the law actually say?

When winter tires reach their limits on snow-covered steep roads, snow chains are required. However, there is no legal obligation to use them – except when the «snow chains mandatory» sign indicates otherwise. Good to know: The requirement applies to front-wheel and rear-wheel drive vehicles as well as models with 4×4 drive. Although 4×4 vehicles are better at negotiating inclines in difficult road conditions, they offer little advantage when braking or driving downhill. There is a risk of skidding.

Snow chains are therefore mandatory for all types of drive systems—unless vehicles with all-wheel drive are explicitly exempted by signage. In Switzerland, snow chains may only be fitted when there is snow on the road. And the driving speed with chains must never exceed 50 km/h!

Multiple chain systems
In addition to standard snow chains, automatic snow chains, textile snow chains, and tire socks are also available. Unlike automatic chains, standard chains must be retightened at the beginning and during the journey to prevent damage to the wheel arches. Automatic chains are easier to install than standard chains, but slightly more expensive to purchase. Textile systems are easier to put on, but in most cases offer only weak starting assistance.

Weather and space conditions usually have a greater influence on installation time than the different chain systems. However, it is always advisable to practice installing the chains at least once in a safe environment before setting off on your journey. It is also highly advisable to carry gloves and a flashlight with you when driving in winter. In some countries, a high-visibility vest is also required when installing snow chains at the roadside.
