MG: The Marvel R e-SUV rolls to the starting line

COMEBACK The MG brand is back. Those who think of small, sporty roadsters will have to make a change. That's because the brand, now part of the Chinese SAIC Group, is entering the European market as an electric vehicle producer. The model range currently consists of partially and fully electrified SUVs, which are mainly in the mid-price segment. This is also the strategy of the Chinese [...]

MG Marvel
The MG Marvel comes in three trim levels, with even the base Comfort version well equipped.

The model range currently consists of partially and fully electrified SUVs, which mainly operate in the mid-price segment. This is also the strategy of the Chinese group, which wants to make electromobility affordable.

Development in London and Shanghai
The Marvel R Electric, which is scheduled to roll out in the fall, is also to fit into this plan. Promoted by the marketing department to a "lifestyle SUV," the model with the ambitious name (Marvel means miracle in German) was developed jointly by the group's London design studio and the creative people at SAIC headquarters in Shanghai and matches the appearance and dimensions of the competitors' offerings.

Generous dimensions in the interior
The Marvel R measures 4.67 meters in length, and the wheelbase is a class-standard 2.80 meters, so that the interior achieves generous dimensions. Even tall Central Europeans will find comfortable conditions in the interior on all seats, and the interior also reaches premium level with fine materials such as leather or Alcantara for the seats, neatly executed decorative stitching and piano lacquer look.

Control of important functions via display
Behind the steering wheel stretches a 19.4-inch display, somehow reminiscent of a US manufacturer, which can be used to control the most important functions. A 12.3-inch information center spreads out in front of the steering wheel, and further settings can be controlled via the sporty little steering wheel.

Torque of up to 665 Newton meters
The MG Marvel is launched on the market with two drive concepts. The rear-wheel drive model is powered by two engines on the rear axle. The all-wheel drive version has a front engine on the front axle. The engines with hairpin technology achieve an output of 212 kW (288 hp) and develop a maximum torque of up to 665 Newton meters.

The Marvel reaches 50 km/h after 1.8 seconds and 100 km/h takes 4.9 seconds. The (regulated) top speed is reached at 200 km/h. MG promises a range of more than 400 kilometers.

Energy is supplied by a 70 kWh battery, which in the best case can be charged up to 80 percent within 40 minutes at a fast charging station. Power transmission is handled by a two-speed gearbox, with a high-speed ratio designed to improve the energy balance.

Whether MG will also be present on the Swiss market probably depends on the success in the neighboring countries
