Happy birthday: Alex Fach toasts Philipp Frommenwiler and then helps him cut the cake. The pilot from eastern Switzerland would have liked points on his special day.

Alex Fach's Porsche team initially had good reason to be happy in Belgium. Matteo Cairoli was the fastest in practice and qualifying. But because he had set a sector best time under a yellow flag on Friday, the stewards mercilessly relegated him from first to fourth place on the grid. In the race, the Porsche junior in Swiss service improved to third place, but after a protest from a competitor, the stewards gave him a one-second penalty this time for leaving the track, as he is called when the wide run-off zones are used too roughly. This dropped him back to fourth place.

Poorly rewarded fighting spirit: Matteo Cairoli was the fastest at Spa, but two penalties ultimately earned him only fourth place behind his pursuer Christian Engelhart.

Both Swiss out of the race
Philipp Frommenwiler wasn't entirely satisfied with ninth place on the grid, but didn't let that spoil his little 27th birthday celebration. His opponents did not give him any presents later in the day. In the turmoil of the first corner, Jeffrey Schmidt and Philipp Frommenwiler of all people clashed, and later both Swiss were innocent victims of cocky colleagues.

The damage to the Thurgau native's car is so extensive that his team will have to work overtime to get it ready for Friday's practice in Monza. "We don't need another weekend like this," Alex Fach stated. Rather one where Matteo Cairoli finds his way back to the top of the standings - preferably at his home race in the Italian GP, which takes place this weekend not far from his home in Como.
