With 322 race starts, the 40-year-old Spaniard ranks second in the sport's all-time list of best drivers. His palmarès includes 32 victories, 97 podium finishes and two world championship titles with the Renault F1 Team in 2005 and 2006.

Successful comeback
After a two-year break from Formula 1, Alonso delivered a convincing performance this season. His fourth place at the Hungarian Grand Prix was not only his best result since 2014, but also made a significant contribution to Alpine's first victory in Formula 1. This was achieved by Esteban Ocon on August 1 in Hungary, the last GP before the summer break.

Laurent Rossi, CEO, Alpine: "We are delighted to confirm Fernando as Esteban Ocon's partner for next season. For us, this is a perfect driver pairing that is one of the strongest on the grid. They complement each other perfectly. Fernando has impressed us all since he returned to the sport at the beginning of this year. His commitment, his teamwork and his focus on getting the maximum out of the team are incredible."

Work as pleasure
Alonso has collected 38 points so far this season. He himself is very happy to confirm the extension of his contract with the Alpine F1 Team until 2022.

Fernando Alonso: "I felt at home the moment I returned to this team and was welcomed with open arms. It's a pleasure to be back at Enstone and Viry-Châtillon working with some of the brightest minds in our sport. It has been a difficult season for everyone, but we have made progress as a team and the result in Hungary is a good example of this development."

Fernando Alonso feels at home in the Alpine F1 A521. His work contributed to the recent victory.
