Is it worth getting a pre-vacation checkup to prevent breakdowns?

Nothing would be more frustrating than a car breakdown during a summer vacation road trip. To prevent this, garages offer pre-vacation inspections, and roadside assistance is available just in case.

Cars have long proven to be practical and comfortable companions on vacation. They serve us well on long drives, often in hot weather, at high speeds, and fully loaded—in other words, under maximum strain. That’s why it’s important for the car to be in perfect condition before setting out on the trip. To avoid unpleasant incidents during your summer trip, it’s a good idea to have your car inspected before departure.

The most important checks can be done at home or at the gas station. Engine oil, coolant, and windshield washer fluid can be quickly checked and topped off. The windshield wiper blades should be in good condition, and proper tire pressure is also a safety factor. The manufacturer’s recommended pressure values should be checked when the tires are cold. When the tires are warm, the pressure increases by 0.2 to 0.4 bar. Rule of thumb: It’s better to have a little too much air than a little too little; 0.2 bar more never hurts.

Please note: Even today, a CH sticker on the rear of the vehicle is still mandatory when driving abroad. In addition, high-visibility vests and a first-aid kit are required in many countries. The Touring Club Switzerland provides excellent overviews of these requirements at tcs.ch. And in many countries, tolls are not only charged for using the highway. Today, environmental stickers are often required in urban areas as well—either in the form of stickers (such as in Germany) or online registration (e.g., France, Italy). Please check in advance!

Take it to the repair shop to be on the safe side

But not all checks can be done on your own—and since modern cars rarely visit the shop thanks to their long maintenance intervals, it’s a good idea to have the pros take a look. Many garages—such as those in the carXpert network—offer pre-vacation checks that are fast, reliable, and reasonably priced. These checks include inspections of the engine, drivetrain, fuel system, cooling system, battery, lights, and suspension. Air conditioning checks are also available, either included in the package or as a separate service. Given the summer temperatures, having your air conditioning system inspected and the filter replaced is highly recommended—for cool, odor-free air that’s free of pollen and pollutants.

Check electric cars as well

The rental car can also be all-electric. While electric vehicles are simpler in design than conventional vehicles, they still require maintenance by qualified professionals—especially for the aspects that are important on a vacation. Software updates, electronic diagnostics, and tests of the energy management systems are performed at the repair shop using specialized tools. Thanks to regenerative braking (energy recovery), the brake system is subjected to less stress; however, it should be checked for corrosion or irregular wear precisely for this reason.

Assistance Can Help

In the event of an emergency, mobility insurance ensures that your vacation can continue uninterrupted, even in the event of a breakdown. carXpert garages also offer this type of assistance: carXpert Assistance is valid throughout Europe 24/7 and, in addition to breakdown and accident assistance—including towing—covers the costs of a rental car or train tickets, for example, if a car cannot be repaired immediately.
