It proves that you have adequate insurance coverage and makes it easier to settle a claim in the event of an accident. In some countries, you must present the card upon entry. It is issued by your auto insurance provider. Abroad, the Green Card is accepted in paper form as proof of insurance and, in some cases, as a PDF on your cell phone. It is generally valid for three years, or five years with some insurers.
But why «Green Card»? Starting in 1965, the card was always printed on green paper. Since 2020, however, it has also been accepted on white paper. The advantage: If the insurer sends it as a PDF, you can now print it out at home. The card includes the car make, license plate number, the insurance company’s address, and information on which countries it is valid in. It also lists the addresses of agencies that can assist with claims settlement.
Widespread recognition
In Europe, the Green Card is recognized almost everywhere, but it is usually not required—for example, in the EU or the United Kingdom, where the license plate serves as proof of insurance. Nevertheless, you should carry it with you. It saves you from having to argue with the police, who in some countries—such as Italy—often react skeptically to the lack of proof of insurance during traffic stops or after an accident. The Green Card is mandatory in only a few European countries. These currently include countries such as Albania and Turkey.
