BMW M2 Coupé: License for pleasure

Caracho, ruckus and skill: In the BMW M2, sound and fun are addictive - which is why we forgive it for finding commuting to the office boring. It's nice that something like this still exists.

Let's write a sentence that makes the BMW press department cringe: The M2 is reminiscent of phone sex ads that used to flicker across justifiably faded TV channels. «Call! Me! Call me!», it said. The M2 speaks to us in a similar way, a racing car in civilian clothes: «Give! More! Accelerate!», it seems to shout at us, looking for people with an overdose of gasoline in their blood.
In everyday driving from A to B, the M2 is good in itself, but neither much sense nor much fun: even the seats demand that you be sporty and slim. Although the comfort itself is good and the automatic is smooth, in the city this power grenade seems to be leashed against its will and clumsy. Even children get claustrophobic in the rear, the hefty turning circle for a car 4.58 meters long is annoying in the parking garage, and the three-liter six-cylinder engine only hums impatiently.

High-quality cockpit including countless configurations for M mode that can be stored on the steering wheel buttons.

Bavarian curve finder
However, none of this matters at all as soon as the brute-looking widebody finally reaches the highway. Then everything fits together perfectly. Press the M button, the 343 kW (480 hp) and 600 Nm bite, trumpet the song of performance and shred off (4.1 seconds to 100 km/h; top speed 250 km/h). Left turn, right turn, left turn - the M2 hits the mark, but demands and wants to be directed and tamed. Unlike its predecessor, the rear end wags less wildly, but still willingly. Drifting? You could. Yes, a fun guarantor of the purest water, tailored to the mountain passes of life. Honestly? For us, it would be too rough for every day, but we envy those who treat themselves to it and say: For me, an M is not for showing off, but for driving.

Sports grenade with fun plus
We could go on forever about the countless configurations for M mode alone, which can be stored on the steering wheel buttons. Great: the M2 is not only one of the last of its kind as a compact coupé, but also because it never poses a touchscreen puzzle when it comes to operation. The cockpit is attractive and of high quality. Well, a piece of hard plastic? Complaining at a high level.

Let's take a look at the prices. The M2 is available with 353 kW (480 hp) from 95,300 francs, including manual transmission. Our test car with an eight-speed automatic comes to 109,310 francs including options. Too much? Then the M240i xDrive 2-series coupé with 288 kW/392 hp for 75,800 francs is a tempting option. Too little? The M2 CS has 50 hp more than the M2 from 138600 francs. Stinginess is not cool here anyway: our M2 achieved 12.4 (factory value 9.6) l/100 km in the test. You don't treat yourself to anything else.

Expert opinion BMW M2 Coupé

Advantages
+ Extremely active and sporty
+ excellent six-cylinder engine
+ intoxicating with gasoline in the blood

Disadvantages
- seems rather unwilling in everyday life
