Alpine: Mobile test laboratory 🎥

SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT The Alpine Alpenglow Hy4 shows that performance, sustainable development and exciting sound are compatible. The hydrogen four-cylinder of the new prototype is to be followed by a V6 engine before the end of the year.

The Alpine Alpenglow Hy4 is not just a concept car, but a practical test vehicle that was developed as a racing car with its carbon monocoque and 340 hp 2-liter turbo engine. It follows on from the Alpenglow concept car, which Alpine presented at the Paris Motor Show in 2022. This ''mother of all future Alpine models'' embodied the brand's level of development in hydrogen-powered combustion engines at the time.

Alpine Alpenglow Hy4
Three tanks store a total of 6.3 kilograms of hydrogen in gas form in the Alpenglow Hy4.

Sound of a racing engine

Following its presentation on the race track on May 10, the Alpenglow Hy4 will make its public debut in front of more than 70,000 spectators on May 11 in the run-up to the FIA WEC endurance race Total Energies 6 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps. The race offers the perfect opportunity to demonstrate to the public how sound can be preserved as an essential part of the fascination of a racing car with an H2 combustion engine. The Alpine Alpenglow Hy4 will also complete demonstration runs during the 92nd edition of the 24 Hours of Le Mans on June 14 and 15.

For long-distance cars

The test vehicle naturally also embodies the name Alpenglow, the glowing light on the mountain peaks before sunrise as a symbol of the dawn of a new day.

Bruno Famin, Vice President Alpine Motorsports, comments: "As part of our commitment to carbon-free motorsport, we see the hydrogen combustion engine as a promising solution. Hydrogen will be an important step in the decarbonization of the next generations of endurance cars and perhaps F1 as well."

Base LMP3 chassis

The hydrogen-powered test vehicle is based on an LMP3 chassis made of carbon fiber. Under the carbon hood of the Alpenglow Hy4 is a 2-liter four-cylinder engine with a turbocharger that produces 250 kW (340 hp). The engine features H2 direct injection at 40 bar and water injection to reduce NOx emissions. It reaches a maximum speed of 7000 rpm and transmits its power to the drive wheels via a sequential gearbox. The top speed is around 270 km/h.

Mercedes-Benz: Update for the Transporter

ONE YEAR VITO After the midsize van, which is available as a Tourer, Mixto and panel van, received its first facelift in 2019, the Swabian is now getting another facelift to make it fit for the future.

Mercedes Vito
Externally, the new edition of the Vito can only be recognized by minor details.

The visual retouching is moderate and relates to slight changes. For example, the radiator grille now has three slats and the front bumper has an enlarged air intake. Further modifications concern the headlights, which can now also be ordered with multibeam LED light.

Richer equipment

There is a new three-spoke steering wheel in the interior, and the range of assistance systems has also been expanded. For example, the Vito is now available with a 360-degree camera. Optional extras such as an electric tailgate can also be ordered. Other extras include steering wheel heating, a digital interior mirror and a wireless cell phone charging station. The MBUX multimedia system in conjunction with a 10.25-inch touchscreen also comes as standard.

When calculating the range of the all-electric e-Vito, the current power consumption, the available charging stations and the estimated charging time are also determined in real time. In addition, pre-air conditioning of the interior is included as standard in the e-version.

Diesel or electric

While the diesel versions of the Vito will continue to be available as a Mixto, van and people carrier, the e-Vito will be offered exclusively as a panel van and tourer. As before, the van has an output of 85 kW (116 hp), which is powered by a 60 kWh battery. The maximum range is 319 kilometers. The ride comfort is pleasant, the handling is similar to that of a passenger car and the steering is smooth. However, the 85 kW (116 hp) electric motor lacks pulling power. The 150 kW drive (204 hp) from the e-Vito Tourer would be desirable here.

The e-Vito panel van offers a maximum payload of up to 950 kilograms and a load volume of up to 6.6 cubic meters. As the battery is located in the vehicle floor, the entire load space can be used without restriction. The maximum total weight is 3.2 tons, and 3.5 tons for the up to eight-seater Tourer. Both are available in two lengths.

Rental cars: insurance and responsibilities

DRIVING WITHOUT LIMITS? Borrowing other people's cars can mean freedom, but without the right insurance, this freedom could quickly turn into financial stress. Find out how you can protect yourself optimally and what you need to bear in mind to be relaxed on the road.

Insurance and responsibilities
Always check your insurance documents to ensure that you are covered before driving the rental car.

Anyone who occasionally drives someone else's car should consider taking out third-party driver insurance. This additional cover in personal liability insurance protects against high costs due to damage to the borrowed car. Do you regularly drive the same car? Then you could be registered as the most frequent driver on your existing car insurance policy in order to be fully protected.

Who pays for damage?

Minor accidents on the road can happen quickly, especially with an unfamiliar vehicle. If the borrowed car has fully comprehensive insurance, most damage is covered. But beware: as the driver, you may have to pay the excess and a possible loss of bonus. Without comprehensive cover, the financial risk lies entirely with you.

International driving tips

When driving abroad in a privately rented vehicle, the same rules apply as in Switzerland. Nevertheless, it is advisable to carry a user permit to avoid misunderstandings and to ensure that all insurance policies also apply across borders.

Conclusion

Renting a car can be a practical and cost-effective option, but without the right precautions in place, unexpected costs can arise. With the right insurance, however, you are on the safe side and can enjoy your ride to the fullest.
