Carrera Cup: Morris Schuring is youngest winner 🎥

WOW! Morris Schuring set a new record with a victory at the Sachsenring: At the age of 18 years and seven months, he is the youngest winner in the history of the Porsche Carrera Cup Deutschland.

The successful Dutchman from Team Fach Auto Tech is the youngest winner in the history of the Porsche Carrera Cup Deutschland, which has been held since 1990. He previously secured the same honorary title in the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup, the international one-make cup with the Porsche 911 GT3 Cup.

Morris Schuring: "I've been racing in the Porsche Carrera Cup Deutschland since I was 16. Becoming the youngest winner here was my goal from the very beginning. I'm proud to have achieved it now."

Sachsenring Morris Schuring Record
Morris Schuring achieved one of his goals of becoming the youngest winner of the Cup.

Managing the lead in the second race

24 hours earlier, he had narrowly missed this success when he finished second behind Porsche junior Bastian Buus. On Sunday, he turned the tables. As early as the first turn, Schuring overtook the Dane, who was on pole. Schuring had a mega start. After that he only had to "manage" the lead. It could hardly have been more perfect.

This task was made easier for him by the fact that Larry ten Voorde (Team GP Elite) was also able to squeeze past pole setter Bastian Buus (Allied-Racing) after just a few meters. For the rest of the race, the two title rivals fought a gripping duel that was time-consuming at some points. As a result, Schuring was able to pull away without any danger.

With two podium finishes, Schuring collected the most points of the weekend and thus added to his points tally. With two race weekends to go, he is fifth in the overall standings.

Alexander Fach in seventh position

Alexander Fach also collected a good number of points on Saturday. With a spirited race, the man from Schwyz secured seventh place overall. One day later, however, Fach was unlucky: in a battle for position, a competitor misjudged and thus cleared Fach off the track in the final lap. The collision, which was not his fault, was followed by the premature end of the race immediately before the end.

Jasin Ferati was fifth best rookie

Jasin Ferati also saw his race come to an early end. In the first race of the weekend, he also came into contact through no fault of his own, which meant an early retirement. But the man from Winterthur was not deterred by this. In Sunday's race, the 21-year-old initially fought his way forward from 15th on the grid and maintained his position in midfield. It was only a ride into the gravel that set him back again. In the end, he crossed the finish line in 15th position, making him the fifth-best rookie.

The next race for Fach Auto Tech will be from September 22 to 24. The penultimate race weekend of the Porsche Carrera Cup Deutschland is then scheduled at the Red Bull Ring.

Mountain championship: New records at Gurnigel 🎥

ALL CLEAR At the penultimate race of the 2023 Swiss Mountain Championship, on Gurnigel, the die is cast. The new champions Marcel Steiner, Bruno Sawatzki and Stephan Burri were all smiles at the finish line.

Gurnigel Mountain Championship 2023
Stephan Burri, champion Marcel Steiner and Bruno Sawatzki are happy about their successes.

Marcel Steiner, Bruno Sawatzki (center gallery) and Stephan Burri had every reason to be happy at the finish line. The trio did (almost) everything right at the 52nd edition of the hillclimb race on the Gurnigel and were able to celebrate as the big winners at the end. Steiner won the title in the racing sports car category for the sixth time, Sawatzk i secured his first title in the touring car category and Burri won the Swiss Hillclimb Cup for the first time for lower-displacement vehicles up to 2 liters.

A single point was missing for victory

That Burri would take the title in his VW Scirocco was to be expected. The man from Bern, who lives in Thurgau, needed a single point at Gurnigel to secure the title. In the end, it was 20 - as in all previous races. Burri is and remains unbeaten in the current 2023 Mountain Cup standings. For the sixth time in the seventh race, he drove a class record and relegated Jürg Ochsner and Ludovic Monnier to 2nd and 3rd place in the IS up to 2000 cm3. Burri is also unassailable at the top of the Interswiss ranking.

Sawatzki made it a little more exciting than Burri in the touring cars. He also started the penultimate race in a good position. But his seventh class win in the seventh race was suddenly on the line after the second race. After an accident in the finishing bend, it was initially unclear whether the Rheintaler would be able to start at all in the third race. But Sawatzki got his Porsche 991.1 Cup back on track and secured class victory in the IS plus 3500 cm3 with a solid third run.

Bruno Sawatzki on the safe side

Roger Schnellmann with his 800 hp Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 8 also remained unbeaten as the fastest driver of all closed vehicles in his category (E1 over 3500 cm3). However, because the man from Schwyz decided not to take part in the Massongex hill climb in July and, unlike Sawatzki, has not yet been able to score any additional points for a new group record this season, he will no longer be able to displace him from the top of the standings at the last hill climb in Les Paccots next weekend.

Marcel Steiner set new records

In the racing cars, Marcel Steiner made the most of his match point at the home race on Gurnigel. Steiner had to be faster than Eric Berguerand to take the title. And he achieved this already in the first heat with a track record. The garage owner from Oberdiessbach covered the 3734-meter course in the first race run on Sunday morning in the new record time of 1:39.420, which corresponds to an average speed of 135.2 km/h. Berguerand was 0.212 seconds slower in the first run. In the second run, Steiner was again fastest - this time almost half a second ahead of Berguerand.

A third trial of strength did not take place. Bergus had to pack up after the second race: "The engine was already making strange noises during practice. We still have to analyze what exactly is broken. But the engine is losing oil. That's why I have to do without. Congratulations to Marcel! He has driven a great season."

The winners of the classes at a glance

The other class winners at Gurnigel included: Daniel Kammer (Toyota Yaris, Super S up to 3000 cm3), Martin Bürki (McLaren 765, Super S over 3000 cm3), Anton Büeler (Mitsubishi Evo RSC, N/ISN up to 3500 cm3), Beat Rohr (Audi 50, E1 up to 1400 cm3), Mike Bürki (VW Polo, E1 up to 1600 cm3), Christian Bralla (Fiat X1/9, gallery on the right), who held his own in E1 up to 2000 cm3 against Reto Steiner (Ford Escort RS) and Sébastien Cocquoz (Opel Kadett GTE), Benoit Farine (Honda CRX, E1 up to 2500 cm3), Hermann Bollhalder (Opel Speedster, E1 up to 3000 cm3), Simon Wüthrich (VW Golf Turbiene) who defeated Bruno Ianniello (Lancia Delta S4) and Mario Bertocchi (BMW E36) in the E1 up to 3500 cm3, Stefan Schöpfer (Audi 50, IS up to 1400 cm3), Rolf Jungi (Citroën Saxo RS, IS up to 1600 cm3), René Aeberhardt (Opel Kadett GTE, IS up to 2500 cm3), Martin Oliver Bürki (BMW E33, IS up to 3000 cm3).

TCS class on the grid again with synfuel

Victory in the TCR class, which was once again contested with Synfuel, went to Mathias Schläppi in the Hyundai i30. In the Renault Classic Cup, Thomas Zürcher (left gallery) secured class victory ahead of Dario Zutter and Philipp Krebs. In the 2-liter formula race cars, Joël Burgermeister in the Tatuus F4 was the fastest despite a slip in the second race run. Second place went to Marcel Maurer, third was Roland Bossy.

TU Munich: 2573 kilometers with one charge 🎥

WORLD RECORD Students at the Technical University of Munich have developed the world's longest-range electric car. The team drove more than 2573 kilometers on one battery charge.

As part of the IAA Mobility, the team from the Technical University of Munich fought for a new world record at Franz Josef Strauss Airport. It was a marathon run until it was finally decided that the world's electric car with the longest range comes from Munich. For the Guinness World Record, the developers modified the muc022, with which the team had already taken part in competitions.

The students focused primarily on aerodynamics and lightweight construction. To make the vehicle suitable for the world record, the group's engineers installed a larger battery with 15.5 kWh. Munich Airport provided an aircraft hangar for the work. This enabled the team to set the record even in bad weather.

longest range electric car in the world
The muc22 took center stage at the IAA Mobility 2023.

Target reached after 99 hours

The existing record was 1608.54 kilometers. The Munich team had already covered this distance in four days. But since the battery of the muc022 was not yet empty, the team continued driving. In the end, 2573.79 kilometers were recorded after 99 hours of driving. Translated, the result also means that the TU fast Eco team can report a consumption of 0.6 kWh/100 km. A permanently excited synchronous motor with 400 watts (0.54 hp) is used for propulsion, and the vehicle has a drag coefficient cW of 0.159 and weighs just 170 kilograms empty.

Proud of the top performance

TUM President Thomas Hofman: "The electric car with the longest range in the world comes from Munich. At TUM, we promote student initiatives from a wide range of disciplines and offer space for creativity alongside studies. The fact that our teams consistently deliver top performances in this regard makes me particularly proud."

EuroSkills 2023: Silver medal for Fabio Bossart 🎥

STRONG PERFORMANCE At EuroSkills 2023 in Gdansk, Fabio Bossart from Lucerne came second. This means another success at a competition on the international stage for the Swiss automotive trade.

Exciting days lie behind Fabio Bossart, the reigning Swiss champion of automotive mechatronics. The Lucerne native can now also call himself Euro-Skills runner-up, as the 21-year-old succeeded in the medal hunt after a nerve-wracking competition in the "Truck and Bus Technology" profession. In the process, he missed the gold medal by just seven points with 729 points. First place went to Lucas Ianni from France, while third place went to Emil Didriksson from Sweden.

EuroSkills 2023 Gdansk
Fabio Bossart provided the right solution at the decisive moment.

Intensive preparation

Fabio Bossart: "It's the reward for all the work over the last eight months. I have succeeded in some items, but for example my favorite item, motor mechanics, pretty much went down the drain. I didn't have a specific placement in mind, I just wanted to be happy with my performance."

Indeed, the preparation period for the European title fight was intense. That's because, in addition to the requirements, Bossart is currently training to become an automotive diagnostician. He completed his first apprenticeship as an automotive mechatronics technician in the commercial vehicle sector at Grund AG Fahrzeuge in Triengen and now works in the passenger vehicle sector at Luzerner Auto Birrer AG in Sursee.

Excellent balance

Olivier Maeder, Management of the Education Division: "With Jean Trotti as our expert, we took part in the commercial vehicle competition at EuroSkills for the second time and, following the gold medal in 2021 by Damian Schmid, we have an excellent record with Fabio Bossart's silver medal. We are proud of Fabio." (Gallery right from left).

Elegant: The EL1 focuses on tradition in terms of appearance 🎥

AS ONCE THE S1 The Elegend brand has now completed the first test drives of its EL1 super sports car. The all-electric bolide is to be hand-built in a series of just 30 units from 2024.

Elegend AG, a high-tech company based in Beilngries, Bavaria, is transferring legendary rally cars into the modern era and calling it #Retrofusion. The first vehicle, the EL1, unmistakably inspired by the Audi Sport quattro S1, is currently under development and is scheduled to go into production next year. Typical of the EL1 are the extremely short wheelbase, the tight overhangs and the sharp beading. Following the unveiling of the first EL1 two years ago, the manufacture is now developing a road-ready prototype and announcing details.

Elegant EL1
At present, the EL1 is still undergoing test runs on a proving ground.

Proportions of the rally legend

Visually, the car, which is only 4.15 meters long, continues to borrow its proportions from Audi's rally legend. Technically, however, the electric supercar breaks completely new ground. The carbon monocoque's stiffness and weight can be further optimized using the complex one-shot process.

Günther Riedl, Managing Director at Roding Mobility and responsible for technology at the Elegend: "In addition to good package and high rigidity, the monocoque promises a low center of gravity and excellent handling. A newly developed aluminum subframe for the front and rear also facilitates access for service and maintenance work and opens up the possibility of developing new derivatives on the platform."

Up to 100 km/h in 2.8 seconds

A lot of development work has gone into the drive components. Elegend has decided to use an existing power set-up for the inverter motor-transmission unit. Power is distributed over all four wheels as standard. Two electric motors deliver a total output of up to 600 kW (816 hp). From a standstill, the EL1 sprints to 100 km/h in around 2.8 seconds, and 200 km/h takes 7.5 seconds. The top speed is 300 km/h.

The 80 kWh battery can be fast-charged at up to 200 kW, and a 22 kW on-board charger ensures fast charging at home. Two hot laps of the Nürburgring Nordschleife can be completed at race pace on one battery charge. The manufacturer puts the price of the EL1 at a massive 890,000 euros.

Bidirectional charging: Tests continue until 2024

PROJECT V2X SUISSE Mobility-Carsharing is testing the potential of electric cars as energy storage until spring of next year. It is already apparent that the bidirectional charging technology works.

Mobility car sharing energy storage test
Honda e from Mobility, used for carsharing operations at 40 locations, are part of the test fleet.

However, Switzerland still has a lot of work to do before the new technology can be widely used. In the future, it should be possible to compensate for fluctuations in the power grid with the help of electric cars. The Swiss pilot project V2X Suisse, led by Mobility, has now proven that this is technically possible. The project, which has been running since 2022, has demonstrated in tests that it meets the technical requirements of grid operator Swissgrid.

Fluctuation compensation

This means that the system platform is able to respond to a signal in less than two seconds to compensate for grid fluctuations. The idea behind this technology is simple. When cars are stationary, they become power banks that can be linked together to form energy storage units and smooth out power peaks.

The current Mobility fleet of 3,000 vehicles alone could theoretically supply 60 megawatts. Customers have now driven more than 400,000 kilometers in Mobility's 50 Honda e vehicles, which are used for car sharing at 40 locations. Because it took longer than hoped to set up the V2X infrastructure, those responsible have now decided to extend the project until the end of March 2024.

Improve framework conditions

Project manager Marco Piffaretti: "In general, the challenges in setting up charging infrastructure in Switzerland are still great. But carsharing companies in particular are dependent on uniform solutions when it comes to developing and operating charging infrastructures. Above all, it is a matter of examining the economic viability of the technology. Sharing energy must be simple and economical."

Background: The project has already shown in the initial phase that many distribution network operators are not really prepared for feeding electricity back into the grid from dual-use batteries. Among other things, solutions are needed for proof of origin of the electricity fed back into the grid.

Price comparison: That's what electricity costs on the highway

SAVING TIPS The TCS has examined the prices at charging stations at freeway service stations and found that there are large differences. Accordingly, the savings potential is high when charging an electric car thoughtfully.

TCS price study charging stations
There is considerable potential for savings in fast charging on the highway.

Those who cover longer distances in a short time with an electric car usually have to use charging stations on the highway. However, the prices at the fast-charging stations are often not clearly displayed. In addition, the prices per kilowatt hour, per charge or per unit of time are confusing and make the price structure appear less transparent.

Per load on average 34 francs

The TCS survey is now intended to increase transparency. It helps motorists to better navigate the current price jungle. In Switzerland, there are 35 freeway service stations with at least one public fast-charging station that has a charging capacity of at least 50 kWh.

TCS compared the prices of these stations with each other and with the prices of 18 Tesla charging stations accessible to third-party brands. At the public fast-charging stations, a charge of 50 kWh costs an average of 34 francs. This will drive an electric car 250 to 300 kilometers. However, the price differences can be very high. The cheapest charge costs 23 francs, the most expensive twice as much. At the Tesla Superchargers, a charge for an unbranded car also costs an average of 34 francs, just like at the fast-charging stations. However, the price fluctuates only between 32 and 36 francs.

At home you can charge cheaply

Tesla users pay significantly less at the Superchargers, namely an average of 25 francs per charge. However, the cheapest way to charge your car is at home. There, the charge costs between 15 and 20 francs. Since the price differences at fast-charging stations vary significantly more depending on location than at conventional fuel stations, the savings potential is correspondingly high. To benefit from the price advantages of the individual providers, you should therefore register on their app or use a charging card.

At 31 of the 35 fast-charging stations tested, the TCS eCharge app, combined with the TCS Mastercard, can save five to 20 percent compared to the standard offer of the other operators.
