Mazda: The small 2 Series comes as a full hybrid

BEING SUSTAINABLE TOGETHER In spring, Mazda will launch its first full hybrid on the market. It is a Toyota Yaris rebranded as the Mazda2 Hybrid. The familiar body shape remains.

Mazda2 Hybrid
Mazda's first model to come as a full hybrid is the Mazda2 Hybrid compact car.

The hybrid model is the latest result of a long-standing collaboration between Mazda Motor Corporation and Toyota Motor Corporation. It will be supplied as an OEM model by Toyota Motor Europe, a wholly-owned Toyota subsidiary

9.7 seconds from 0 to 100 km/h
Like the Yaris Hybrid, the Mazda2 Hybrid combines a 93 hp 1.5-liter three-cylinder petrol engine with a 59 kW (80 hp) electric motor.

The system output is 116 hp. This enables the small car to accelerate from zero to 100 km/h in 9.7 seconds, with a top speed of 175 km/h. Fuel consumption in the combined WLTP cycle should be between 3.8 and 4.0 liters per 100 kilometers.

Performance and fuel efficiency
When starting off, the Mazda2 Hybrid automatically starts in virtually silent EV mode without emitting CO₂, nitrogen oxides (NOx) and other pollutants. In normal driving mode, the petrol engine and electric motor work together as effectively as possible for an optimum balance between power delivery and fuel efficiency. The kinetic energy generated during braking is recovered and stored in the high-performance battery.

Trunk volume is 286 liters
Despite its compact dimensions, the Mazda2 Hybrid offers generous space: With a wheelbase of 2.56 meters, up to five people enjoy sufficient space, while the trunk capacity is 286 liters. The Pure, Agile and Select trim levels are available.

Genesis: Top marks for the G models

FIVE STARS The Euro NCAP tests are one of the most important accompaniments to a new car launch. Now the Genesis models G70, G70 Shooting Brake and GV70 have impressed with their high level of occupant protection in a recent round of tests.

Genesis top marks NCAP
The triple team of G models from Genesis performed optimally in the tests.

Five stars for the Genesis G70, G70 Shooting Brake and GV70 models. In the latest Euro NCAP test, all three vehicles from the Korean automaker have been awarded the top rating for their high level of safety. This means that all models of this brand offered in Europe have now received the maximum of five stars.

Good values for airbag in the center
The G models scored well not only for adult and child occupant protection, but also for pedestrian protection and assistance systems. Euro NCAP praised the impact stability and protection offered by the passenger cell in the side impact test.

Seats and head restraints showed optimum protection against cervical spine injuries in the event of a rear-end collision. The brand's patented center airbag was also rated very highly.

Advanced safety systems
In the assistance systems category, Euro NCAP awarded Genesis for its advanced safety systems. In particular, the Autonomous Emergency Brake Assist and the attention and lane departure warning systems received high scores.

Dominique Bösch, Managing Director of Genesis Motor Europe: "As an independent and impartial safety consultancy, Euro NCAP has long enjoyed the trust of customers. The fact that Genesis has now once again achieved the maximum rating of five stars following the first round of tests in May is testament to its wide range of active and passive safety technologies."

In addition to the G70 sedan and the GV70 SUV, the G70 Shooting Brake can now also be ordered. Specially developed for Europe (AutoSprintCH reported), the premium station wagon is the fifth new Genesis model in Switzerland in less than a year.

Toyota: Yaris GR sprints with hydrogen

ALTERNATIVE FUTURE Don't say Toyota isn't good for surprises. As part of a large presentation of various models, the Japanese showed a GR Yaris with hydrogen alias GR Yaris H2.

Yaris GR Hydrogen
The hydrogen-powered GR Yaris is equipped with a 1.6-liter turbocharged engine

Wait, that 261-horsepower midget we all love so much? Exactly. But not with the Mirai's fuel cell. Much like the Mazda RX-8 years ago, the GR Yaris H2 burns fuel directly. The hydrogen fuel, fuel tanks and refueling process of the test vehicle are the same as in the Mirai.

Conceptual development and testing
While hydrogen combustion engine technology is still in the early stages of conceptual development and testing, which began in 2017, and is not yet ready for commercialization, Toyota's hydrogen-powered Corolla Sport is already delivering high performance with near-zero tailpipe emissions at motorsport events in Japan.

System for the use of hydrogen as a fuel
The hydrogen-powered experimental GR Yaris and Corolla Sport are both equipped with the same 1.6-liter inline three-cylinder G16E-GTS turbocharged engine found in the GR Yaris, but with a modified fuel supply and injection system for hydrogen fuel use.

The experimental hydrogen-powered Corolla Sport has already participated in Toyota Gazoo Racing's Super Taikyu race series in the rookie category in Japan since May this year, where the team took on the challenge of testing the experimental hydrogen combustion engine in the rigors of motorsports.

Mercedes-Benz: As if Stirling Moss were at the wheel 🎥

REMEMBER The short film "The Last Blast" shows the unique drive of the famous Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR racing car with starting number 722 through the center of London. It pays tribute to racing legend Sir Stirling Moss.

Mercedes-Benz Classic honors the life of Sir Stirling Moss with this unique film drive through the middle of London.

The drive of the famous Mille Miglia-winning Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR "722" through London is part of a farewell tour before the car's return to the Mercedes-Benz Museum.

"Who do you think you are? Stirling Moss?" according to legend, a policeman once asked the British racing driver after a daring overtaking maneuver in London. "Yes, I am," came the honest answer.

Stirling Moss The Last Blast
The drive of the Mille Miglia-winning 300 SLR "722" through London is part of a farewell tour.

Original vehicle from the Mille Miglia 1955
The short film picks up on this lore and numerous other scenes from the life and career of Stirling Moss. The Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR in the film is the original vehicle made famous by Moss' victory at the 1955 Mille Miglia. The camera zooms in on a sticker on the front fender of the bike with the famous question.

With this, and as part of a police escorted drive through the middle of London, the film celebrates the life of Moss, who died on April 12, 2020 at the age of 90. Filming took place at the end of September this year in London, the center of Moss' life for more than 60 years.

Decades of service to the brand
In addition to the main protagonist, the Silver Arrow, there is also an invisible protagonist: the former racing driver himself. He achieved a great victory in this 300 SLR together with Denis Jenkinson in the Italian road race from Brescia to Rome and back in May 1955.

In honor of Stirling Moss, the company has now let the inline eight-cylinder engine roar through London for the last time before the vehicle is returned to its permanent home in the museum in Stuttgart.

With the three-and-a-half-minute film, Mercedes-Benz Classic honors and thanks Sir Stirling Moss for his decades of service to the brand - and also his family, who have always reliably supported the racing driver.

Juice Technology: Mobile Wallbox for Daimler

STERNSTUNDE Swiss company Juice Technology AG, known as a manufacturer of mobile charging stations for electric vehicles, is offering its mobile wallbox as a white-label product throughout Europe via Daimler's after-sales distribution channels.

Wallbox for Daimler
The 22 kW booster is TÜV-Süd approved. In the Pro version, it has interchangeable adapters on the vehicle side.

Juice Technology AG's expertise as a manufacturer of mobile charging stations for EVs is confirmed time and again. Now the Juice Booster 2, which prevailed over other competitors' products in a tender process, has been accepted by Daimler's accessories division Mercedes-Benz Customer Solutions.

Christoph Erni, founder and CEO of Juice, said, "For Juice as an emerging company, the addition of our globally popular Juice Booster 2 to the premium brand's official distribution channels is further validation of its efforts to date."

Tailor-made offer for fleets
The items in the after-sales range are carefully selected to meet the high demands of customers. The Juice Booster 2 is the first and so far only mobile wallbox available immediately for all dealers and end customers.

With the appropriate adjustments in terms of brand, it is fully tailored to the customer's requirements. The leasing and fleet management provider Athlon, a subsidiary of Daimler, is already working with Juice on the charging infrastructure. In the process, a customized offer for fleet operators has been created to make the electrification of vehicle fleets attractive.

Charging at conventional sockets
With the adapters of the Juice Booster 2, the electric car can be charged at any conventional household and industrial socket - even connections of public charging stations can be used. The charger is always set to the optimum charging power.

Overloading of sockets is ruled out. When the plug registers a possible overheating, it passes a signal to the charging station, which can then shut down the charge in a controlled manner.

The 22 kW booster is TÜV-Süd approved. In the Pro version, it has interchangeable adapters on the vehicle side.

Triumph: Prototype 1901 ready to go for the anniversary

COMEBACK Just in time for the brand's 120th anniversary next year, the first Triumph ever built, the 1901 prototype, has been faithfully restored. The motorcycle was discovered only a few months ago.

Triumph prototype
The basis for the design of the 1901 prototype by Dick Shepherd was a standard Triumph bicycle.

Rumors about the existence of the first prototype had been around for quite some time, as the motorcycle was already referred to in advertisements and contemporary reports dating back to 1901.

For the construction, a normal Triumph bicycle from that time was supplemented with an engine coming from the Belgian manufacturer Minerva. The aim was to arouse public interest and test the demand for a motorcycle from the bicycle manufacturer of the time.

Unique details of the motorcycle
Leading Triumph collector Dick Shepherd discovered the bike from a collector friend who recently passed away. The fact that the bike had unique details not found on Triumph's first production motorcycles caught his attention.

Together with the machine, the collector had also received a letter from Triumph from 1937, which described the origin of the motorcycle and contained important details. With an engine number matching the information in the Minerva engine records for a first Triumph of 1901, the historical significance of the motorcycle was actuated.

Hinckley exit after 100 years
The 1901 prototype will be on display for the first time from today at the British Motorcycle Live trade show until December 12. It is planned that the motorcycle will then be ridden for the first time in over 100 years at the Visitor Center at the company's headquarters in Hinckley on December 14, 2021. Subsequently, the ancestor of all Triumph motorcycles will become part of the exhibition celebrating the 120th anniversary of the brand.

Alfa Romeo: The sweet car life

LA DOLCE VITA The Swiss Museum of Transport in Lucerne presents the exhibition of the automobile collector Corrado Lopresto. This continues the collaboration between the classic car enthusiast and the museum.

La dolce vita
Collector Corrado Lopresto brought many exceptional Alfa models to the Museum of Transport.

The car exhibition is named after Federico Fellini's famous film "La dolce vita" and the legendary Spider that Alfa Romeo produced in those years. Hardly any other sports car embodied the Italian style of the 1950s and 1960s better than the Spider.

First the Giulietta and later the Duetto perfectly embodied the dream of freedom and lightheartedness in the years of economic boom.

Prototypes and pre-series vehicles
The exhibition shows some rare prototypes and pre-production vehicles from the collection of Corrado Lopresto, a collector who restores his vehicles with particular care and meticulousness.

On display are the first prototype of the Giulietta Spider, presented at the Paris Motor Show in 1955, a pre-production model with a sporting past in the USA, the prototype of a Giulia Spider that was never built, and the first example of the 1750 Spider Veloce Osso di Seppia - with chassis number 0001.

In addition to these magnificent vehicles, the public can also admire a pre-production copy of the 1993 Spider and the prototype Alfa Romeo 2600 Spider Ghia. This alternative to a premium-class Spider also never went into production. The exhibition at the Museum of Transport will last until March 2022.

Toyota: Corolla Cross Hybrid with lighter batteries 🎥

FUTURE After launching in countries such as Thailand, Brazil, Japan and the United States, the Toyota Corolla Cross continues to hone its international credentials with its debut in Europe.

The Cross comes with black add-on elements at the wheel arches as well as in the sill area.

In Germany, the SUV will be delivered from fall 2022 and will occupy an intermediate position between the C-HR and RAV4. As always, a hybrid system will provide propulsion, and this is already the fifth generation.

Corolla Cross Hybrid
Optionally, there is also a variant for the Toyota Corolla Cross with the all-wheel drive AWD-i.

More powerful and significantly lighter batteries
In the new version, the hybrid drive has more powerful and lighter lithium-ion batteries (Toyota speaks of a weight reduction of 40 percent), in addition, the electric motor is connected to a 2.0 four-cylinder gasoline engine. The system produces 197 hp and guarantees acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 8.1 seconds.

The front wheels are driven as standard. There is also an optional variant with AWD-i all-wheel drive. In this case, the drive package is supplemented by an additional electric motor on the rear axle and the system output increases by 42 hp. The additional motor is automatically activated if necessary - for example, if there is a lack of traction on the front axle.

Instrument panel with a 12.3-inch screen
The European Corolla Cross is the first to feature a digital instrument panel with a 12.3-inch screen. And the infotainment system screen is also changing. Up to 10.5 inches can be ordered as an option, and the hardware works with a faster processor.

By means of a so-called Smart Connect package, one gets access to information on current traffic information, the voice assistant and online updates, among other things. The networked services include driving style assessment, vehicle tracking and air conditioning activation.

Narrow lights and an implied diffuser
The design of the Corolla Cross has been tailored specifically to the European market. The SUV presents itself with a massive radiator grille, which is color-contrasted depending on the model version, and the low LED headlights - which get a modified interior for Europe - extend far into the inflated fenders.

The roof line slopes gently toward the rear. There, drivers behind see narrow LED lights and a suggested diffuser.

A roof edge spoiler visually stretches the roof. Dark B-pillars also give the window band length. An eye-catcher is the chrome band on the upper windows, which increases in size towards the C-pillar. One can be curious.

The newcomer will be at Swiss dealerships from August 2022
