Mercedes: 1202 kilometers with one charge 🎥

1000-KILOMETER CLUB The Mercedes-Benz Vision EQXX surpasses its own efficiency record during a summer road trip from Stuttgart to Silverstone. One battery charge was enough for the research vehicle to cover 1202 kilometers.

The most efficient Mercedes model ever, the Vision EQXX, demonstrated even greater efficiency on a long-distance drive.

With an average 100-kilometer consumption of 8.3 kWh, it covered the distance from Stuttgart to Silverstone on one battery charge. It covered 1202 kilometers in real traffic.

Mercedes Vision EQXX
The Mercedes Vision EQXX research vehicle managed more than 1200 kilometers on one battery charge.

Obstacles and heavy traffic
After a challenging detour in Pforzheim, the Vision EQXX crossed the French border near Strasbourg and then drove at highway speed to Calais to pass through the Eurotunnel by train.

Continuing through England, he had to face traffic on the notorious M25 around London. After a stop at Mercedes-Benz Grand Prix in Brackley, it was on to Silverstone, where Formula E driver Nyck de Vries completed another eleven laps of the iconic race track.

Sophisticated thermal management
Throughout the road trip, the car benefited from its innovative thermal management to achieve low average fuel consumption despite heavy traffic and summer temperatures.

The sophisticated interaction of air dampers, coolant valves and pumps ensured that the electric drive unit maintained a very efficient temperature balance with minimal energy input.

The new air routing management, combined with a cooling plate installed in the vehicle floor, makes it possible to use the air flowing along the underside of the vehicle. This is the most efficient way to keep the electric drive unit cool.

Test of powerful e-technologies
During the 14 hours and 30 minutes of driving, the air conditioner operated for just over eight hours with little negative impact on overall energy consumption.

Thus, this latest long-distance drive of the 4.98-meter-long and 1755-kilogram EQXX on public roads has once again demonstrated the capabilities of Mercedes-Benz's electric efficiency technologies. In addition, the engineers have obtained further valuable data for the ongoing development program.

Market: Fewer fines for importers

EMISSIONS The rapid progress in the electrification of new cars and vans has led to a sharp decline in Swiss CO2 penalties for vehicle importers. The penalty amounts fell by almost 80 percent.

Less buses
Tesla still leads the pack in new electric car registrations, with the Model Y and Model 3 (pictured).

According to the Swiss Federal Office of Energy (SFOE), the penalties levied for passenger cars in 2021 amounted to CHF 28.1 million, compared to CHF 132.1 million in 2020. At CHF 9.4 million, the penalties for new light commercial vehicles were also significantly lower than in the previous year.

The sharp decline demonstrates the successes that the members of the Swiss Automobile Importers Association are celebrating with their efforts to reduce emissions. With a market share of 22.5 percent, almost one in four new passenger cars was a plug-in vehicle in 2021.

Target value for passenger cars undercut
Since the changeover to the more realistic WLTP measurement procedure for new vehicles, the CO2 target values in Switzerland have been adjusted accordingly to an average of 118 grams per kilometer (cars) and 186 grams per kilometer for light commercial vehicles.

As Auto-Schweiz explained in February of this year based on its own calculations, its members met the target value with their weighted average CO2 value for new passenger cars in 2021.

Auto Schweiz President Albert Rösti: "The SFOE's figures even show that the CO2 target was exceeded by around 1.5 grams per kilometer."

Poor preparation for development
Further market growth for electric vehicles is foreseeable in view of the manufacturers' announcements. However, according to Albert Rösti, Switzerland is currently ill-prepared for this development.

Albert Rösti: "We have major hurdles in setting up the charging infrastructure, both in public and private spaces. I have therefore already asked the Federal Council in a parliamentary motion how it intends to solve the charging infrastructure problem."

Ensuring sufficient production and reliable distribution of low-CO2 electricity is also of fundamental importance for the electrification of road transport, emphasizes Alber Rösti.

Rally di Alba: 14 Swiss teams at the start

PREMIERE The third round of the Swiss Rally Championship takes place in Alba, Italy. 14 Swiss teams are at the start - including the top 3 of the Swiss championship.

Rally di Alba
Will Jonathan Hirschi achieve his first victory on Volkswagen in Italy? Photo: Hänggi.

After the Critérium Jurassien and the Rallye du Chablais, the third round of the Rally di Alba will take place on June 24 and 25, 2022. The type 2 rally covers nine special stages or 121.07 kilometers and will be held in Piedmont - between Turin and Genoa.

Strong trio creates excitement in the field
Of the 111 teams on the grid, 14 are from Switzerland. Among them are the current top 3 of the Swiss Rally Championship.

  • These include the leader in the intermediate standings, Jonathan Michellod (Skoda Fabia)
  • the runner-up Jonathan Hirschi (VW Polo)
  • and third-placed Mike Coppens (Citroën C3)

Pure excitement is guaranteed. Coppens has already won the Critérium Jurassien this year. Michellod most recently celebrated his first victory in the SS Rally at the Chablais. His pursuer Hirschi was second at both rallies. Ivan Ballinari also joins this trio with the #24. The Swiss rally champion of 2018 and 2019 will be competing in a VW Polo, as he did at the Chablais.

Championship New territory for the Swiss
The four top drivers from Switzerland have one thing in common: None of them has taken part in the Rally di Alba before. The race, which is part of the Italian championship, is therefore new territory for all of them. If anyone has a minimal advantage, it's Michellod. Its coach Olivier Burri contested the Alba in 2019 and 2021 on a VW Polo.

Jonathan Michellod: "That's true. But of course it's not the same as when you've ridden it yourself. Besides, only two stages are identical from last year. For me, the rally is new. I'm looking forward to it. And because none of us has driven there before, the starting position is the same for everyone."

Trucker Festival: Vehicle mechanic, a job with a future 🎥

WHERE TO MEET The International Trucker & Country Festival attracts up to 50,000 people to Interlaken every year. carrosserie suisse presents the profession of EFZ vehicle mechanic.

Peter Bucheli (center gallery) is head of the Vehicle Construction and Road Transport Department at the Lucerne Vocational Training Center. He is responsible for 400 apprentices and twelve teachers. The busy vocational school teacher is also known to the Swiss vehicle construction scene as a committed ambassador for the vehicle mechanic profession.
Best profession is vehicle mechanic

Peter Buchli: "There are two events where we belong. These are transport-CH in Bern and the Interlaken Trucker Festival. This is where the whole of Switzerland comes together; it's all about showing the profession. Our message: the best profession you can learn is vehicle mechanic. You also have to make people aware that you can have everything made in Switzerland.

annual highlight in the Bernese Oberland
The International Trucker & Country Festival Interlaken takes place this year from June 24 to 26 and can be called legendary with a clear conscience. Trucker, biker, line dancer, country and western fans will meet at the airfield in the large western village with its unique festival atmosphere and over 100 stores, bars and food stands, attractions, lots of line dancing and over 30 (partly internationally known) bands and show acts.

The impressive Truck Mile with 1130 giants of the road will also host the appearance of carrosserie suisse.

Talks with the people from the industry

Peter Buchli: "The most important thing is conversations with people from the transport industry and the vehicle world, but also with quite a few visitors", We design the stand (gallery on the left and right) similar to the one at Transport-ch in Bern with large-format pictures of actions, statements and educational paths. These are starting points for conversations. We had good experience with this in Bern."

Competition with a hydraulic crane
At least one teacher and two apprentices will always be present at the stand. The location of the 4×6 meter tent in the heart of the Trucker Mile is next to the tents of ASTAG, Routiers Suisse and other companies. There will be a competition with a small hydraulic crane that can be controlled by remote control to win great prizes.

Slalom Chamblon: Will the champion again? 🎥

FAVORITE Martin Bürki can become champion again at the final of the Swiss Slalom Championship in Chamblon. At the start is also the Suzuki Swiss Racing Cup.

The Chamblon (VD) Slalom will be held on June 25 and 26, 2022. The 38th edition is also the final of the 2022 Swiss Slalom Championship. The title decision has not yet been made.

But there are many indications that serial champion Martin Bürki will win the title again. The Uetendorf garage owner is the only skier still without a loss (after five races). A second place in Chamblon would be enough for his ninth slalom title, the eighth in a row.

The video shows Martin Bürki at the Slalom de Bière this year.

The main thing is not a technical problem

Martin Bürki: "That's true. But anyone who knows me knows that I will try to win this race as well. I've been around for a long time and it's not the first time I've been in this situation. If technology throws a wrench in my plans, which can happen at any time, so be it. I don't worry about it. You can't control something like that."

Slalom Chamblon
Series champion Martin Bürki has every chance of winning his ninth title.

These are competitors for the title
In addition to Bürki, who competes in the E1 class up to 1600 cm3, four other drivers have theoretical chances of winning the title: Christian Darani (Fiat/E1 up to 2000 cm3), namesake Martin Olivier Bürki (BMW E33, E1 up to 3000 cm3), Nicola Fankhauser (Honda Civic, A up to 2000 cm3) and Philip Egli (Dallara F393, E2 up to 2000 cm3).

This quartet can also still reach 100 points with a fifth fully rated class win. So that in the end the better strike results decide on the medal places. And Bürki, assuming he finishes second in Chamblon in the minimum, has his nose in front.

Who will secure the day's victory this time?
In addition to the title decision, the final on the barracks site in Chamblon will naturally also revolve around the question: Who will secure the last stage victory in 2022? Taking into account the races so far, there are really only two drivers who can be considered for this: Philip Egli from Glarus, who lives in Zurich, and Lukas Eugster from Herisau. On paper, the starting position speaks in favor of Egli. The partly narrow course is perfectly tailored to Egli's narrower Formula 3. In 2019, at the last slalom in Chamblon for the time being, the civil engineer also emerged victorious in a time of 2:57.542 min....

The surprise in the fight for the day's win in Chamblon could be Yves Hängärtner.

Final of the Suzuki Swiss Racing Cup
In addition to the NAT competition on Sunday, June 26, (starting at 7 a.m.), the LOC races will also take place on Saturday on the 4.3-kilometer track. Within the framework of these races, the final of the Suzuki Swiss Racing Cup will also be held. Whereby the championship was already decided in favor of Fabian Eggenberger in Bure, at the penultimate race of 2022. In the only Swiss one-make cup with hybrid technology, it will be exciting to see who takes second and third place: Marcel Muzzarelli (104 points), Sandro Fehr (98) and Patrick Flammer (95).

With eleven victories between 1927 and 1957, Alfa Romeo is the most successful brand at the Mille Miglia, once the world's most prestigious road race. In 1977, the Mille Miglia was revived as a classic car rally and was now held for the 40th time.

Alfa Romeo Sport Zagato
The 1929 Alfa Romeo 6C 1750 Super Sport Zagato won the Mille Miglia when it was still new.

And again a team drove to victory in the Alfa Romeo. Like last year, Andrea Vasco and co-driver Fabio Salvinelli were celebrated as the winners. The two Italians shared the Alfa Romeo 6C 1750 Super Sport with Zagato bodywork. A vehicle of this type won the Mille Miglia back in 1929.

Rally from Brescia to Rome and back
Traditionally, the route covers around 1600 kilometers (1,000 miles) from Brescia to the capital and back. The last stage led through places that play an important role for Alfa Romeo - such as the race tracks in Varano and in Monza. The classic car rally ended with the triumphant arrival at the finish line in Brescia, including the traditional parade on Viale Venezia.

Premiere for the Tonale electrified SUV
Tens of thousands of spectators followed the classic race cars along the route. The Alfa Romeo Tonale cars in the accompanying convoy also generated enthusiasm. The brand's first electrified SUV is making its debut at dealerships in many European countries these days. The Tonale was also very well received at the Mille Miglia.

Land Rover: This fleet is a record

DRIVING AND FLYING A fleet of 75 Land Rover Discovery Sport vehicles was handed over to Marti AG at the new Emil Frey Zurich North sales location. The SUV is equipped with up to seven seats.

Land Rover Discovery Sport
With 75 Discovery Sport, Marti AG took delivery of the largest Land Rover fleet ever delivered in Switzerland.

Marti Group Zurich has experienced dynamic development since its beginnings in the 1980s. Today, around 600 employees work in the traditional areas of building construction, remodeling, civil engineering, foundation engineering, concrete repair and building protection alone.

Predominantly, the Group's projects are located in the greater Zurich area, in Aargau and in eastern Switzerland. Land Rover's new Discovery Sport models are therefore used in a wide variety of areas and functions. This is the largest Land Rover fleet ever delivered in Switzerland. This is an unusual record.

Timed handover in runaway 34
Due to the size of the fleet, the handover was timed. While the drivers took delivery of their new vehicles, their companions were enthralled by the four flight simulators in the Runaway 34 restaurant at Kloten Airport - almost to the point of takeoff. Afterwards, the 120 or so people picking up the vehicles were treated to culinary delights in a unique aviation world.
