Datsun: 240 Z in top sporting shape

SPORT CAR CLASSIC The Datsun 240 Z became a true icon of the brand in the 1970s, which is now also known as Nissan in Europe. A Ticino native has now restored one of these sports coupés.

Datsun 240 Z coilover suspension
The restored and tuned Datsun 240 Z doesn't look more than 50 years old.

Fabrizio Ribeiro, an engineer from Ticino who specializes in sensor technology and robotics, has been interested in cars - and drift events - for many years. He first practiced drifting on the PlayStation, and in 2019 he acquired a 1995 Nissan 200 SX for a sporty ride on the road, which he tuned with KW suspension, special exhaust and roof spoiler.

With standard drive

A little later, he came across a 1972 Datsun 240 Z on the Internet, which was on the roads of California. Fabrizio was immediately impressed. Because the sports car was equipped with an in-line six-cylinder engine and standard drive, had never been decommissioned for long and had never been extensively restored, it was exactly what the Nissan fan was looking for. The car was then brought from the USA to Europe by the Dutch importer Alfamario, and the company Müller-Gysin AG, which specializes in international transport, finally transferred it to Ribeiro's workshop in Ticino.

Extensively restored

Once there, Ribeiro turned his attention to the car's electrics. The speedometer had to be given a km/h scale, and switches and plugs had to be repaired or replaced. The company DPM Motorsport from Le Locle then took care of the Swiss registration of the vehicle.

The carburetor and ignition were overhauled at the beginning of 2022. New wheel bearings and new wheels were further modifications, and various rust repairs were also necessary. And of course, Fabrizio also wanted to further improve the driving dynamics with the installation of a new, perfectly adjustable V3 coilover suspension from KW Automotive. Front camber plates, ST stabilizers at the front and rear and a powerful strut brace were also integrated. The vehicle rolls on 195/70 R 14 Yokohama-Advan-HF tires and decelerates with Nismo brakes.

Classics in Lucerne

However, after all the conversion work, the Datsun has only been completed for the time being. Fabrizio Ribeiro has further plans. He wants to fit larger wheels and an LSD limited slip differential and possibly integrate shorter ratios for gears 1 to 3 in the 5-speed gearbox.

The spruced-up classic car can be admired from May 31 to June 2 at the KW automotive stand at Swiss Class World in Lucerne.

Morgan: sprightly septuagenarian 🎥

THE UR-MORGAN The Morgan Plus Four has been built since 1950 with a few interruptions. Now it is being released with a comprehensive update that brings its drive technology, driving dynamics and retro design up to date.

In principle, Morgen naturally wanted to retain the characteristic body shape for the facelift. This has been achieved, although the front and rear lighting elements, the front and rear fenders and the front splitter and rear diffuser have been redesigned.

Morgan Plus Four
Beneath the nostalgically shaped aluminum body of the Morgan Plus Four is state-of-the-art technology.

Focus on driving pleasure

The English manufacturer's philosophy is that driving pleasure is more important than acceleration values and lap times. A lightweight 2-liter four-cylinder engine from BMW is installed above the front axle in the longitudinal direction, delivering a maximum of 258 hp and a maximum torque of 350 Nm in the manual version and 400 Nm in the automatic version. With a vehicle weight of only around 1010 kilograms, this is sufficient for 0-100 acceleration values of 5.2 and 4.8 seconds respectively and a top speed of 240 km/h. The revised chassis of the Plus Four, which is only 3.83 meters long, can be further refined if the optional Dynamic Handling package with new springs and adjustable dampers is ordered.

New sound system

The redesigned interior of the two-seater features an audio system from Sennheiser with a new loudspeaker concept. Morgan uses traditional tools and working methods to process the fine Scottish leather used in the interior. And as has been the case for decades, the Plus Four is fitted with an aluminum body over its ash wood frame. The wheel suspensions, braking system and vehicle electronics are, of course, state-of-the-art.

Every car a one-off

Morgan does not have a special personalization department. But in production, there is a practically infinite number of possible combinations in terms of equipment, so each one is unique and selected by the customer. The order book has been opened and production will begin in May.

Lexus: car design in the fashion world 🎥

TIME EXHIBITION Lexus has opened the Time exhibition as part of Milan Design Week 2024. Two installations by international artists can be seen there - in the Art Point and Art Garden of Superstudio Più - until April 21.

Milan Design Week is the world's largest international design event. The Time exhibition shows how software and energy innovations can influence the future development of cars and how these vehicles can reduce luxury and CO2-neutrality with each other. The artworks are inspired by the LF-ZC concept car, which illustrates the possibilities of a next-generation electric vehicle.

Lexus Milan Design Week 2024
At the opening ceremony for the Time exhibition, artists present their works at Milan's Superstudio Più.

Beyond the Horizon

This installation includes a series of two-meter-high sculptures. Although the sculptures appear uniform, they create different moods through unique lighting effects. As a symbol of innovation and the mobility of the future, the Lexus LF-ZC is at the center of the work. Designer Hideki Yoshimoto combines modern technology with traditional Japanese craftsmanship in an imposing projection surface measuring 4 by 30 meters, which shows changing views of the horizon.

8 Minutes and 20 Seconds

This work is an expression of Lexus' commitment to driving innovation in mobility by celebrating the potential of energy and software together with the goal of coexisting carbon neutrality and luxury. The installation features a full-scale representation of the LF-ZC concept, utilizing solar energy captured by organic photovoltaic cells and stored in built-in batteries. Named after the time it takes for light to travel from the sun to the earth, "8 minutes and 20 seconds" imagines the car between holographic trees and a seating area.

Lancia: car in the designer world 🎥

MODERN MILAN The electric special edition Lancia Ypsilon Cassina bridges the gap between the worlds of automobiles and luxury furniture. At the Milan Design Week, the Lancia stands for the Bredaquaranta design chain.

From April 16 to 21, Lancia will once again be taking part in Milan Design Week, the world's most important event of its kind with around two million visitors every year. Design has always been a hallmark of Italy. The new Lancia Ypsilon, with which the brand is currently experiencing a comeback throughout Europe, is the expression of design, comfort and well-being with clear echoes of the world of furniture.

Lancia Ypsilon Cassina
The reinterpretation of a classic for the modern age. Elegance meets sustainability.

With the furniture store

Thanks to the collaboration with the luxury furniture manufacturer Cassina, the interior of the Lancia Ypsilon becomes a living room. This claim is particularly evident in the special Ypsilon Cassina model. In keeping with this strategy, the vehicle is part of the exhibition of the Bredaquaranta design chain during Milan Design Week. The Lancia Ypsilon Cassina can be seen in a showroom dedicated to Cassina's luxury furniture in Milan's historic Brera district. The showroom is located on Via Fatebenefratelli and is open daily from 10 am to 10 pm.

Home of the Ypsilon

The participation in Milan Design Week is the latest in a series of activities by the Lancia brand in the capital of fashion and furniture design. The official world premiere of the Lancia Ypsilon also took place here. In Milan, the first fully electric vehicle in the brand's history set off on a tour of Italy, stopping off at 100 dealerships in 60 cities.
