Range Rover: Ice dancing with the E-Range Rover

FIRST PROTOTYPES Test drives are currently taking place with the development vehicles of the new Range Rover Electric. During the calibration drives in the cold belt at the Arctic Circle, the beefy Range Rover shows off its uncamouflaged exterior.

Range Rover: Ice dancing with the E-Range Rover autosprint.ch
With the quiet drive and the new traction control, the Range Rover Electric ensures even more travel comfort and safety.

With its electric drive, the Range Rover Electric will set new standards for luxury travel. These days, the first prototypes are on the road for demanding tests - at locations all over the world. The all-electric drivetrain is being put through its paces in extreme temperatures. From minus 40 degrees Celsius in the Arctic Circle to plus 50 degrees Celsius in the Middle East.

New traction control
In the extreme sub-zero temperatures, the tests focus on the performance of the battery and the electric drive unit. This includes the transmission, the electric motor and the power electronics. Tests on the frozen lakes of Sweden have shown that the new, in-house developed all-electric drive unit surpasses the already known performance on grippy surfaces while ensuring that the all-terrain and all-weather capabilities remain perfect on any surface.
For the first time on a Range Rover, a new type of traction control ensures outstanding driving characteristics on icy or slippery surfaces. Instead of a conventional traction control system, the Range Rover Electric distributes the task of traction control directly to each individual electric drive control unit.
The software enables precise speed control of the electric drive unit to precisely regulate wheel slip and reduce the need for ABS intervention.

Even more sophisticated
Thomas Müller, Executive Director Product Engineering, says: "Range Rover with electric drive means the luxury, refinement and performance you expect from Range Rover plus the near-silent electric drive - for effortlessly smooth and relaxed travel. To ensure the high quality and exacting electrical parameters, we have implemented an extensive testing and development program and pushed the Range Rover Electric to the limit. This is how we ensure that the car's capabilities remain unparalleled."

Mercedes-Benz: The off-road icon

TRADITION NOW FULLY ELECTRIC Mercedes-Benz presents the new G 580 with EQ technology, the off-road classic par excellence. It comes in a fully electrified version, but of course with uncompromising off-road capabilities.

In the new electrified G-Class, the legendary design language meets new drive technology. Electromobility opens up unimagined new possibilities for off-road qualities. The electric G-Class naturally remains true to the character of the model series. It retains the angular silhouette including the iconic elements. Like the conventionally powered model variants, its body is based on a ladder-type frame. However, the development team has modified and reinforced this to integrate the electric drive.
The combination of independent suspension with double wishbones at the front and newly developed rigid axle at the rear is also retained. With its usable capacity of 116 kWh, the high-voltage lithium-ion battery integrated in the ladder-type frame provides energy for WLTP ranges of up to 473 kilometers. An underbody made of a mix of materials with a carbon content protects the battery.

The Edition One is an exclusive special model available for the market launch.

Newly interpreted
The new Mercedes-Benz G 580 with EQ technology is fully in keeping with the tradition of the model series established in 1979. It is 4.62 meters long, weighs 3085 kilograms and is powered by four individually controllable single engines close to the wheels. These are integrated into the ladder-type frame and develop a maximum total output of 432 kW (588 hp) and a maximum torque of up to 1164 Nm. The torque vectoring control system provides virtual differential locks.
In addition, the new drive concept enables unique driving functions for off-road use such as G-Turn, G-Steering and the off-road crawling function.

Precision work on the bodywork
A slightly raised hood, a new A-pillar trim, a spoiler lip on the roof trim and air curtains in the rear wheel arch extensions contribute to the optimized aerodynamics and aeroacoustics. The newly designed off-road control unit and the "transparent hood" enable a digital off-road experience. Standard equipment includes the MBUX infotainment system and a 12.3-inch driver and media display with touch control.

Other highlights include the Intelli-Lux lighting system, the STLA medium platform and the new flat 98-kWh battery pack, which should allow ranges of up to 700 kilometers. The Grandland then only needs around 26 minutes to charge the battery to 80 percent at the quick-charging station.

Got bigger
The new edition is 173 millimetres longer, 64 millimetres wider and 19 millimetres higher than its predecessor, measuring 4.65 meters in length, 1.90 meters in width and 1.66 meters in height. The 2.78 meter long wheelbase and the steeply sloping tailgate increase the amount of space in the passenger and luggage compartments. The rear bench seat can be split 40:20:40 to create a load volume of up to 1641 liters. Together with the up to 20-inch alloy wheels, it therefore visually marks the top of the Opel SUV range. But the illuminated Opel flash is not the only lighting innovation. The Intelli-Lux pixel matrix HD light is also celebrating its premiere. The system has 51,200 elements and enables high-resolution light distribution.

The driver and passengers are greeted by a clear and homely interior design. The 16-inch central display, which is angled slightly towards the driver, and the high center console exude sportiness. Behind the steering wheel, a fully digital display together with the head-up display provides the most important information.
