Formula E: Sébastien Buemi in the top 10 again 🎥

POINT HUNT Mitch Evans won the Sao Paulo E-Prix, the sixth round of the 2023 Formula E World Championship, giving the British brand its first victory of the season.

The New Zealander prevailed after 35 laps ahead of his compatriot Nick Cassidy, whose Envision is also powered by Jaguar. Evans' teammate Sam Bird finished third. Fourth place went to Antonio Felix da Costa (Porsche), with DS Penske teammates Jean-Eric Vergne and Stoffel Vandoorne finishing fifth and sixth.

Pascal Wehrlein in the second works Porsche, who thus defended his championship lead, the two McLaren drivers Jake Hughes and Rene Rast as well as Sebastien Buemi (Envision) completed the top 10.

Formula E
Only Sébastien Buemi scored points at the sixth round of the Formula E World Championship.

Nico Müller crashed into Edoardo Mortara

This race was also disappointing for the Abt team. Although Nico Müller showed an improvement in form and was in the top 10 at times at the start of the race, he had to pit his damaged car after a collision with Edoardo Mortara (Maserati) on lap 21. Team-mate Robin Frijns drove an unremarkable race in his first outing after overcoming a wrist injury and finished 15th.

Porsche continues to lead the drivers' championship

In the Formula E drivers' standings after six of the season's 16 races, Wehrlein continues to lead by a clear margin with 86 points, ahead of Jake Dennis (Andretti, 62 points), Cassidy (61), Vergne (60) and Felix da Costa (58). The next stop for Formula E is Germany. On the 22nd and 23rd, a double header with one race each on Saturday and Sunday will take place in Berlin-Tempelhof.

Rolls-Royce: Haute Couture in the Phantom made to measure 🎥

CAR AND FASHION With the Phantom Syntopia, Rolls-Royce presents the most elaborately tailored variant of this model series. The noble limousine was developed in collaboration with designer Iris van Herpen.

With the Phantom Syntopia, Rolls-Royce sets the bar even higher in terms of individualization than with previous individualized versions.

Rolls-Royce CEO Torsten Müller-Ötvös: "The Phantom Syntopia is the most ambitious and unique bespoke Phantom model we have ever created. Based on the Phantom Extended Wheelbase, the one-off was created in collaboration with Dutch fashion designer and haute couturière Iris van Herpen."

Phantom Syntopia
The Phantom Syntopia will take its place in a customer's private collection in May.

Patterns and shapes from nature

The epithet Syntopia is derived from a collection by Iris van Herpen, designed according to the principles of biomimicry. Patterns and shapes are meant to be taken from nature. To create the shimmering exterior, Rolls-Royce's Bespoke team developed a unique Liquid Noir paint finish.

In sunlight, this shows purple, blue and golden undertones when viewed from different angles. To achieve this effect, the jet black color is coated with a finish that contains a mirror-like pigment. And to add the elegant shimmer, the team developed a new technique for applying pigment.

Starry sky with fiberglass stones

When the car doors are opened, the eye is immediately drawn to the Weaving Water starlight roof sky. The starry sky in Rolls-Royce cars is familiar. For the Syntopia, the already familiar Rolss-Royce starry sky was technically refined even further. It was made from a single piece of leather, into which 995 sparkling fiberglass stars were then integrated. The manufacture of the headliner took around 700 man hours. The rear seats are covered with a special silk blend fabric that creates a pattern of light reflected on water.

Perfume fragrance according to customer's request

The Phantom Syntopia is also the first Rolls-Royce model to have a tailor-made scent. This scent is released into the interior from the headrests in fine doses. The technical development took more than two years. The Phantom Syntopia will go on sale to customers in May at a naturally undisclosed price.

Expert comparison: Stromer goes easy on the budget

DRIVE AND SERVICE A comparison of the overall costs of cars with electric or thermal drive systems has shown that electric cars are less expensive in the long term and at higher mileages.

Total cost comparison
The Toyota Yaris Cross performed particularly well in the TCS comparison.

Once again, the TCS comparison shows that the lower operating and maintenance costs of electric vehicles compensate for the higher purchase costs despite higher electricity prices. The higher the mileage, the greater the savings potential in the fuel costs of electric cars. Added to this is the environmental balance sheet, which is not taken into account in this comparison, and which can also be more advantageous for electric cars than for conventional combustion cars.

Lifetime and mileage

For the cost comparison, the total costs over a service life of ten years and mileages of 75,000, 150,000 and 300,000 kilometers were calculated for the five best-selling vehicles in Switzerland in 2022 in both drive categories. The catalog prices of these models at the beginning of 2023 were used as the purchase price. Electricity costs were included at CHF 0.27/kWh, gasoline prices at CHF 1.78/liter and diesel prices at CHF 2.06/liter.

Total cost comparison

Electric vehicles in first places

If the new price of the electric car is not much higher than that of a comparable combustion model, more cost-effective overall costs can be achieved. At the electricity prices used for the calculation, the fuel costs for electric cars are four to six francs per 100 kilometers.

Gasoline or diesel vehicles, on the other hand, cost about twice as much, around eight to twelve francs. Thus, electric vehicles occupy the first five places in this comparison in terms of consumption. Toyota's Yaris Cross Hybrid follows in sixth place with low gasoline consumption of 4.4 liters per 100 KMilometers.

Yaris Cross with lowest total costs

$With a mileage of 300,000 kilometers, the VW Tiguan Allspace has the highest fuel costs after ten years at more than 44,860 francs. The Tesla Model 3 is the cheapest at 11,908 francs, closely followed by the Model Y at 13,690 francs.

Due to its lowest purchase price and low gasoline consumption, the Toyota Yaris Cross achieves the lowest total cost of ownership in this comparison for all three mileages.

Fach Auto Tech: Three young talents at the start

FUTURE With Alexander Fach, Morris Schuring and Gustav Burton, three young riders are competing for Alex Fach's racing team. Thus, the team continues its path with promising talents.

Subject Auto Tech
The Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup kicks off on April 3 and 4 with the pre-season test.

The fact that this work is bearing fruit is demonstrated by the factory commitments of Matt Campbell, Earl Bamber and Matteo Cairoli, who learned at the team in their younger years. Now Fach is once again giving three young drivers the chance to prove themselves on the international stage in two series.

Successful rookie in the team

New to the Schwyz team is Gustav Burton. The 20-year-old Englishman started in the 2022 Porsche Carrera Cup Great Britain and finished the season as the best rookie. A year earlier, he was crowned British GT4 Champion. Now Burton wants to prove his talent on the international grid.

Gustav Burton: "The Supercup is the best Porsche one-make cup in the world, and the competition is correspondingly fierce. I'm very excited about how I'll perform in my debut season. I have great confidence in the team and my abilities and believe that we can achieve strong results. My goal this year is to bring home the rookie championship."

First race in May at Imola

With Morris Schuring, Burton has one of the youngest drivers in the field at his side. The talented Dutchman already celebrated his debut in the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup in 2021. In 2023, he will also represent the colors of Fach Auto Tech in the Porsche Carrera Cup Deutschland. Team-mate Alexander Fach is also tackling this double program. The two-time Porsche Sports Cup Suisse champion will thus contest another year with the Schwyz-based racing team.

Alex Fach: "We are known for relying on young drivers in the Porsche one-make cups. The first race will be held in Imola, Italy, from May 19 to 21."

One can be curious about the season.

Porsche: Next Cayenne with optimized chassis

CARE IN DETAIL Since 2017, the Porsche Cayenne has been manufactured entirely at Volkswagen Slovakia in Bratislava. Now the Zuffenhausen-based company has decided to produce the fourth generation of the sports SUV in Bratislava as well.

Porsche Cayenne
The extensively redesigned Cayenne on test drive. It will soon celebrate its world premiere.

The fourth, all-electric generation of the Porsche Cayenne will be launched in the second half of the decade. Porsche AG has decided to also manufacture the next Cayenne at Volkswagen Slovakia's multi-brand site in Bratislava. After the Taycan, the Macan and the 718, the Cayenne will be the fourth Porsche model series with an all-electric drive. An additional all-electric SUV above the Cayenne will then be built at the Porsche plant in Leipzig in the second half of the decade.

Future Cayenne an all-electric SUV

Albrecht Reimold, Member of the Executive Board for Production and Logistics at Porsche, knows the strengths of the Bratislava site from his own experience: "The plant in Bratislava has done an outstanding job in recent years and has received several awards. The future Cayenne will be the first purely electric SUV to be manufactured there. I am sure that the team is preparing meticulously for this and will bring the new generation to the starting line in typical Porsche quality."

Long-distance comfort and off-road capability

In addition to realigning the drive portfolio with combustion engines and hybrid drives that are as powerful as they are efficient, the engineers also worked on the Cayenne's chassis technology. The soon-to-be-launched facelift variant was redesigned with the aim of creating an even wider range between typical Porsche on-road performance, long-distance comfort, and off-road capability.

The Cayenne has been shaping the sports SUV segment for more than 20 years. With 95,604 vehicles delivered, it recorded the highest demand among the Porsche model series in its anniversary year 2022. And that is set to remain the case.

Land Rover: The Defender 130 in the desert test 🎥

DRIVING IN ANOTHER WORLD The 5.36-meter Defender 130 completes the British off-roader series. It had to prove what it can do in the Dubai desert.

The display behind the steering wheel shows 42 degrees. The air shimmers above the red-gold sand dunes that line up as far as the eye can see. Our caravan of five brand-new Land Rovers burrows through the soft desert sand. The wheels struggle valiantly with the loose ground, spooling, swirling fountains of sand through the air, and finding some grip again as the sun burns mercilessly from the sky.

Defender 130
The Defender 130 is 34 centimeters longer than the 110, which has been available for some time.

Car does the job without any problems

A sweaty affair - you'd think. But on board the new Defender 130, it's not only pleasantly cool and enormously comfortable, it's also very relaxing to drive. We rock over the dunes on luxurious leather armchairs, while the air suspension smoothes out bumps and jolts with ease. Sure, it shakes now and then, sometimes throwing the occupants from right to left, but that's part of the fun. But the car does all the work.

The off-road driving program - here, of course, in Sand mode - orchestrates the intelligent all-wheel drive, regulates throttle response and sets the shift points of the automatic transmission so that you don't get stuck if possible. In the new Defender model, off-road driving is now really no longer a great art.

34 centimeters change the Defender

The only thing new about this model variant is actually its length: the Defender 130 is 34 centimeters longer than the 110, which has been available for some time - together with the short 90, the British have now completed the traditional Defender range. These extra centimeters, which fully benefit the rear, create a different kind of vehicle.

With a length of 5.36 meters and eight seats in three rows, the off-roader becomes a huge luxury SUV. No wonder the car was presented in Dubai, where the Defender 130 fits in wonderfully. In the U.S., too, the model won't attract much attention on the roads - here, however, the big Landi scrapes the limits of what can still be driven through a parking garage without breaking a sweat.

Little driving noise in the interior

The Defender 130 also does an excellent job on the road - no comparison to its bumpy predecessors, which had little competition off-road but could quickly become uncomfortable on asphalt. Of course, the high weight of 2.6 tons is noticeable during fast corner changes, but basically the Land Rover rolls very manners, lets only little driving noise penetrate into the interior and is easy to control in curves.

Diesel or gasoline depending on demand

Unlike the Defender 110, the 130 does without the four-cylinder. The choice is between a 3-liter inline six-cylinder diesel with 249 hp (D250) or 300 hp (D300) and a 3-liter inline six-cylinder gasoline engine with 300 hp (P300) or 400 hp. Prices start at 101,000 Swiss francs for the entry-level Defender SE D250, while the top model Defender 130 X P400 is available from 140,000 Swiss francs. Top model is only temporary. Because there will be a more powerful version a little later - we can already reveal that much.

Mazda: Discover the history of the brand

REVIEW One of the biggest attractions in the Japanese city of Hiroshima is the recently renovated Mazda Museum. In ten areas, it displays little-known details from the brand's bygone days.

Mazda Museum
The Vision Coupè shows Mazda's design promise for the future.

Based in Hiroshima, the Mazda automotive group was founded in 1920 as the Toyo Cork Kogyo Company, renamed Toyo Kogyo in 1927, and finally transformed into Mazda Motor Corporation in 1984. The Mazda Museum at the company's headquarters in Hiroshima, which is open to the public free of charge, is the ideal place to experience the brand's significant past.

It all started with a tricycle

Jujiro Matsuda started the Mazda adventure in Osaka. Among the first products was a three-wheeled utility vehicle. It perfectly symbolizes the brand's versatile history, as it is made entirely of parts manufactured in Japan and can carry an impressive 400 kilograms of cargo.

Today, the museum exhibits the successor type GB - in the cult color Green Panel.

From the middle of the 20th century, Mazda then focused on passenger cars. Among the most historically significant models are the Cosmo Sport, the Savanna and the Cosmo AP, one of the first vehicles to be launched in red.

In several series on race tracks

Mazda also demonstrated top-level sporting prowess in several racing series, including Le Mans and IMSA. One of the most eye-catching exhibits is the Mazda 787B, which scored a historic victory in the 1991 Le Mans 24 Hours.

The only V12 engine of the Japanese, developed from 1980, had a displacement of 4000 cm3, but never made it into a production car. But Mazda's Challenger spirit lives on in other unique engine creations, such as a 3-disc Wankel engine and a V6 Miller Cycle engine.

Life-size visions as a concept

With their elegant exteriors, the Vision Coupé and RX-Vision models are the perfect end to the museum visit. Both were brought to life thanks to the exceptional skills of an experienced clay model maker who transformed his ideas into life-size models that later became concept cars. Next to the two concept cars is the Mazda LM55 Vision Gran Turismo, a life-size model of the car from the Gran Turismo video game.
