TCS: Well prepared for the motorcycle season

BEFORE THE FIRST TOUR Higher temperatures tempt bikers back onto the road. After the long winter break, however, the bike should be thoroughly checked. Riding training sessions are also useful for experienced riders.

Motorcycle season guide
Before the start of the motorcycle season, the rider and vehicle should be prepared.

The first warm days have already lured motorcyclists out onto the roads. A few acclimatization laps are good for a fresh start after the winter. The big tours usually start with the Ascension weekend. The motorcycle should be well prepared for this, but riders should also be fit.

Training for all

Motorcycling is a sport, and every sport needs a warm-up phase. This is where specialized riding training courses from TCS Training & Events can help. The "Moto Warm-Up" course, for example, is ideal for the start of the season. If the basics are right, the "Moto cornering" course on the Lignières track provides the opportunity for concentrated practice. Themed after-work training courses offer a quick refresher course to brush up on riding skills.

Frequent breakdowns

Last year, the TCS patrol was called out 16,600 times for motorcycle breakdowns or accidents. Especially after the long winter break, it often happens that the battery is flat. It is therefore better to remove it during the winter months and extend its service life with a charger. After reinstallation, special battery grease protects the bare terminals from corrosion.

To prevent a broken motorcycle chain, it is important to check the chain and chain tension regularly. After cleaning the sprocket and chain wheel, the chain must be freshly lubricated. It is also advisable to check the air pressure and the general condition of the tires before the first ride. And to avoid a variety of engine defects, the oil and oil filter should be changed once a year - preferably right after the winter break.

Tire thing

Don't be fooled by the wear indicator (TWI, Tread Wear Indicator), which is only 0.8 millimeters high on motorcycle tires. The legal minimum tread depth in Switzerland and Europe is 1.6 millimeters. There is a fine for tires with less tread depth.

KW automotive: Updated driving dynamics

KLASSIK-FAHRWERKE suspension applications from KW Klassik are far more than just wear parts for classic cars and modern classics. They are able to combine high-quality vehicle components with cutting-edge damper technology.

KW V5 Honda NSX
In the case of the Honda NSX, motorsport technology from the late 1980s meets current KW suspension systems.

New suspensions give classic vehicles the ride comfort and driving dynamics of current models without losing their original character. Even the Honda NSX from the 1990s, which was considered a very innovative sports car, benefits from the new generation of KW classic suspensions with solid piston dampers. Due to numerous customer requests, the suspension manufacturer now also offers the V5 coilover suspension for the Japanese mid-engine sports car.

For handling and comfort

The suspension with its solid piston dampers gives the NSX more direct handling and increased tire grip. The more sensitive damping also optimizes ride comfort. In addition to the option of continuously lowering the Honda NSX by up to 55 millimetres, the solid piston dampers can be individually fine-tuned in the four driving dynamics parameters of high-speed and low-speed compression as well as high-speed and low-speed rebound. The recommended retail price is 6499 euros.

Proven coilover suspension

Following the successful market launch of the KW V5 coilover suspension for current sports cars and super sports cars, the suspension will also be introduced for selected older vehicle models. "In 2023, we introduced the V5 for the timeless Porsche Carrera GT," says KW classic car expert Sascha Daucher. "Due to the demand from Japan and the USA for a KW V5 coilover suspension for the first and second generation of the Acura NSX and the Honda NSX respectively, we now offer it including expert reports for both model generations."

Car market: Ten percent plus in April

GROWTH The automotive market in Switzerland and Liechtenstein is defying the economic challenges and showed impressive growth in April.

In April of this year, the market for new passenger cars in Switzerland and the Principality of Liechtenstein experienced impressive growth of 10.4 percent despite the general economic downturn. A total of 20,040 new registrations were registered, a significant increase compared to the 18,150 in April last year, which was still characterized by supply bottlenecks and parts shortages. The industry thus experienced its strongest April since 2021 and recorded a slight increase in new registrations of 0.4% since the beginning of the year compared to the first quarter of 2023.

New drive trends

The preference for drive technologies has continued to shift. According to Christoph Wolnik, media spokesman for auto-schweiz, the petrol car remains the leader with a market share of almost a third despite a decline, closely followed by hybrid drives without plugs, which also account for almost a third of the market. Plug-in hybrids are also recording growth, while electric cars are lagging somewhat behind expectations with a slight decline of 0.2 percent to 13,603 new registrations and a market share of 17.6 percent.

Consumer behavior and regulatory challenges

The ongoing uncertainty among consumers, caused by fluctuations in the energy market and the discussions surrounding the Electricity Act, continues to influence decisions in the vehicle market. According to Peter Grünenfelder, President of auto-schweiz, the upcoming referendum on the Electricity Act on June 9 could be decisive in setting the necessary course for a successful transformation to electromobility. The switch to electric drives can only succeed with a secure power supply and sufficient charging infrastructure.

Outlook

The development of the market in the coming months will largely depend on the overall economic situation, the availability of new vehicles and political support for sustainable mobility solutions. The coming month and the vote on the Electricity Act will show in which direction the automotive market will move.

Sportec: An S model for the Classic too 🎥

OWN CHARACTER Sportec further enhances the 964 Classic. For the Classic S variant, the Porsche specialists from Höri have once again gone into detail to set themselves apart from their model brothers Ferdinand and Sub 1000.

Sportec's classic department explains that the Classic series was "created for people who appreciate the classic and sleek shapes of the former Porsche 911". A Sportec Classic thus combines the shapes of the F model with the modern technology of a Porsche 964, with the car being rebuilt from the ground up. Now the classic specialists have put a further developed version on wheels with the 964 Classic S.

Sportec Porsche 964 Classic
The 964 Classic S has the status of a new car and is optimally tailored to customer requirements.

Broader and more individual

Externally, the S version, whose body is made of 100 percent sheet steel, is clearly recognizable as a 964 Classic and shines with its blue paintwork. Chrome-plated details and a side sill integrated into the bodywork further enhance its shape. Its width has increased by 30 millimetres thanks to the more voluminous wheel arches. It is fitted with 17-inch wheels in the RSR look, which are fitted with 205/50 tires at the front and 255/40 tires at the rear. ST-look tailpipes are responsible for the sporty sound, while the upgrade of the brake system from the Ferdinand model ensures deceleration in keeping with its status. Larger brake discs dissipate the kinetic energy.

The changes that Sportec Classic has made to the base fit in with this. The Öhlins Road & Track suspension with individually adjustable rebound and compression damping provides more comfort thanks to dual flow valve technology. It ensures that compression and rebound occur with the same dynamics, as the damper fluid follows the same flow path in both directions. At the same time, this update is accompanied by a lowering of up to 30 millimetres.

Also comfortable

Future 964 Classic S owners will enjoy remarkable comfort on elegant Recaro Classic seats upholstered in leather and fabric. The seats blend seamlessly into the sporty interior, as do the modified controls. This once again reflects the attention to detail of Sportec's Classic department.

In the Bürzel rear, the 3.8-liter heart from the Ferdinand now sets the pace instead of the 3.6-liter engine. This increases torque and maximum output to 394 Nm and 325 hp. Thanks to the sports clutch and the shorter shift travel of the 5-speed gearbox, this combination gives the Classic S the 964 Sportec crown.

Lexus: Upgraded all round

URBAN CROSSOVER For the facelift, Lexus is equipping the compact premium crossover with a more powerful self-charging hybrid drive system, new digital instruments and improved safety functions.

Lexus UX Crossover
The Lexus UX 300h comes with an extended safety system. These include the proactive driving assistant, the driver monitor and the exit assistant.

The Lexus UX, one of the brand's best-selling models in Europe, is receiving a comprehensive upgrade to its drive technology as well as a number of other improvements. The self-charging hybrid model UX 300h replaces the UX 250h. In addition to the 2-liter gasoline engine, the new model uses fifth-generation hybrid technology to improve performance, efficiency and handling.

More powerful electric motor

The changes include the lithium-ion battery, which replaces the nickel-metal hydride battery, and the redesign of the inverter, which is no longer installed as a separate unit but is combined with the electric motor. The new battery enables a system output of 146 kW (199 hp). In the models with E-Four all-wheel drive, a permanent magnet motor is now used instead of the induction motor. This results in an even more direct response and even better handling. The rear motor also serves as a generator for the regenerative braking system.

Improved driving dynamics

The 2-liter petrol engine plays a key role in the overall efficiency of the UX 300h. It operates with a high compression ratio of 13:1 and a dual injection system with intake manifold and direct injection. The VVT-iE variable valve timing system helps to reduce exhaust emissions. Thanks to the increased performance, the UX 300h accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 8.1 seconds as a front-wheel drive model and in 7.9 seconds with all-wheel drive.

The lateral inclination of the body is better damped when cornering at speed and the vehicle's position is also more stable under heavy braking. The UX 300h with E-Four also offers better control when turning, braking and accelerating on roads with varying levels of grip. The electronic stability control VSC optimizes the distribution of drive torque between the front and rear wheels.

Cupra delivered 56,600 vehicles in the first quarter of 2024, and March was even a new record month for the brand with 23,800 deliveries. "The Formentor and the Leon have both contributed significantly to the brand's success. With almost 600,000 vehicles delivered since its launch in 2018, the Challenger brand has been incredibly successful," says Wayne Griffiths, CEO of Cupra.

Sportiness at every turn

The aggressive look of the Sharknose front end is defined by the triangular Matrix LED lights and the wide lower cut-out. The same lighting design also serves as a frame for the illuminated Cupra logo at the rear. A new, improved Human Machine Interface is implemented in the digital cockpit behind the steering wheel and in the 12.9-inch infotainment system.
