Background: Launched almost 20 years ago by Nicolas Hayek, founder and president of the Swatch Group, this Swiss innovation initially struck many observers as too modern and too daring. But despite any initial skepticism, the smart is a huge success story. When the smart prototype was presented to the Swiss public for the first time at the Glattzentrum in Wallisellen on December 5, 1997, there was a rare euphoria, the likes of which probably still break out today when new cell phones or game consoles are launched. And the commitment of the Kenny's Group contributed significantly to the success of the city runabout. Over 60,000 Smart cars have been sold in Switzerland alone since its launch in 1998. This has also had an impact on the Swiss street scene. CEO Smart Dr. Annette Winkler: "Zurich has the highest Smart density in the world in relation to its population."
