Neel Jani: In the Taycan on the kart track
MEMORIES In the fourth part of the Swiss video series, the Porsche works driver recalls the start of his career in karting and builds a bridge from electric racing to production cars. From the Porsche 99X Electric, Neel Jani moves to racing karts and then to the Porsche Taycan. Neel Jani: "When my motorsport career began 30 years ago on the kart track in [...]
From the Porsche 99X Electric, Neel Jani moves to the race kart and then to the Porsche Taycan.
Neel Jani: "When my motorsport career started 30 years ago at the kart track in Lyss, I was five years old. Back then, I would never have thought in a million years that I would be a Porsche Formula E works driver today. And that one day I'd be driving around here silently in a Porsche Taycan even less so..."
The native of Bern, who grew up in nearby Jens, takes the first all-electric production sports car for a spin around the kart track, which he is very familiar with, and then continues his journey in the surrounding area.
Neel Jani: "It's quite a lot of fun. Porsche has really managed to transfer the sporty DNA to the Taycan as well."
Technology Transfer
The 800-volt technology used in Formula E will also be used in the German sports car manufacturer's first all-electric production car. Energy management and efficiency are important success factors both in Formula E and in series development.
Porsche's entry into Formula E goes hand in hand with the market launch of the Porsche Taycan, which will be coming to Porsche Centers in Switzerland in early 2020.
In five minutes we continue
The Taycan is the first production vehicle to use a system voltage of 800 volts instead of the 400 volts normally found in electric cars. Taycan drivers benefit from this especially when on the road: In just over five minutes, energy for a range of up to 100 kilometers (according to WLTP) is recharged with direct current (DC) in the fast charging network.
Impressive driving performance
The variant of the Taycan that Neel Jani drove on the kart track is the Taycan Turbo, which has up to 500 kW (680 hp) of overboost power. From a standstill, the all-wheel-drive model accelerates from zero to 100 kilometers per hour in 3.2 seconds. The range is up to 450 kilometers (according to WLTP) and the top speed is 260 km/h.
