Regardless of whether they are powered by an internal combustion engine or an electric motor: In the future, too, new cars will have to undergo extensive testing before they go on sale as production vehicles.
To this end, appropriately equipped test and technology centers must be set up. Daimler officially opened such a center last September in Immendingen in southern Germany.
After more than three years of construction, testing operations began at the new test center just a few kilometers from the Swiss border. The automaker has invested over 200 million euros in the test site, which covers an area of more than 520 hectares.
55 kilometers of paved roads
There are 55 kilometers of paved roads alone for the prototypes and new vehicles. In addition, there are numerous tracks with different surfaces as well as off-road test tracks.

The community of Immendingen has gained a new economic perspective through the center.
"We are bundling global vehicle testing here and will also further develop alternative drive systems such as hybrids and electric vehicles from the EQ brand. In addition, we will test assistance systems and autonomous driving functions here," said Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of the Board of Management of Daimler AG, at the inauguration.
