Alcohol test: New sample simplifies control

The Touring Club of Switzerland expects that with the introduction of the evidential breath alcohol test as of October 1, 2016, the control procedures will be simplified and made more convenient for the police and, of course, also for the road users. Alcohol testing: In the future, the devices will display the results in milligrams of alcohol per liter of air (mg/l). However, this new unit of measurement does not mean any change in the permitted amount of alcohol for drivers, and the penalties will also remain the same as before.

For the TCS, it is crucial that road users can still insist on a blood sample in case of doubt. However, the safest option remains to abstain completely from alcohol in road traffic. Until now, the result of breath alcohol samples was only considered evidence if the value was below 0.8 per mille and was confirmed by the person concerned. In the meantime, however, technically sophisticated devices can also determine the breath alcohol level in the range of 0.8 per mille or more. A blood test is therefore only necessary in cases of suspected drug use, at the request of the person concerned or in exceptional cases. Drunk driving is still a significant safety risk: alcohol plays a role in 17 percent of all accidents involving fatalities or injuries. In 2015, more than 1,000 accidents with minor or serious injuries and a total of 33 fatalities throughout Switzerland were sometimes attributable to the influence of alcohol. Therefore: If you drive, you don't drink.
